Repairing My Maxwell-Nilsson Windlass

Ahoy:

Well I managed to repair several problems my orphaned circa 1986 Maxwell-Nilsson VR-700 windlass recently. Only cost me about twenty bucks in parts. But, the knowledge I gained in doing it myself was priceless. I hope others can use this information as well. You can see the mechanical repair journey I made at the following:

Re: Repairing My Maxwell-Nilsson Windlass

Hi Mike,
I think my windlass is a v3000. I was looking for clutch lubrication when I came across your posting.
The posting is great. I have had similar experiences. I am now using a camera to help me remember.

Thank you for your posting.

Good to hear that you've already recovered the cost of joining.

Re: Repairing My Maxwell-Nilsson Windlass

I have a 1985 Nilsson V1000 windlass that was abused and neglected before I acquired it.. The gears stripped out soon after purchase and I contacted Nilsson in NZ. What a treat. They were very helpful and informative and gave great
advice and suggestions on repairing my unit. I requested the parts suggested, gave them the credit card and received the parts 4 days later in the lower Caribbean. Everything fit perfectly and the winlass is now like new.
Great folks, great service and very reasonable prices.

Re: Repairing My Maxwell-Nilsson Windlass

Very nice write up Mike!

+1 for Nillson. I had a V1000 as well and they had all the parts I needed to repair the windlass. The problem I had was that there were so many broken parts that the cost was going to be over 50% of the cost of a new windlass. I decided that it was better to buy an all new windlass. So that is what I did. I bought from Nilsson and it has worked great.
