Does it make sense to regalvanize an anchor? This Old Delta looks rough, but I doubt there are any strength concerns, but am wondering if it can be regalvanized. Any idea what it would cost?

It doesnt appear to be rusty....? Just got that old galv patina...? I've seen a lot of white painted anchors.. over the galvanizing. I imagine if you paint your anchor the galv never wears out!

Re: Regalvanize an Anchor

just had my rocna redone, no issues, they sandblast it first then into the zinc bath.
cost$100.00 NZD. CQR's and any anchor that have lead in them for extra weight have to be refilled after galvanising.

I don't see any rust.
if you have it re-galvanized it will look like that again after a few days in salt water.

Re: Regalvanize an Anchor

re-galvanization cost in US is 40 cents per pound, but there is a minimal fee of 200-300$ depending on location.... so it helps to pull a bunch of people from your local marina and do it together...

This initially sounds a bit light-hearted but in fact is a good suggestion. I know a couple of marine engineers who use this extensively. I think it would be a very good option for the light rust stain that anchors develop over time. Buy you a few more years at least.

Thanks all.... Probably will at least have it sandblasted or cleaned and then spray but not galvanize.

Hi, do not sandblast! Do not clean with acid! Just a swift rub with a "scotchbrite" type pad, and then spray...

Re: Regalvanize an Anchor

I have had good success with spray coated galvanising.

On nearly new surfaces, you should scotch brite the surface to remove any roughness. Don't sand through the existing galvanising.

Wipe the surface with vinegar - important! - to allow paint to stick.

Use a spray cold-galvanising coating that is heavy in zinc: 95% or better content. A Mil. spec product will be great.

This is better used as a prophylactic than a remedy. A severely rusted anchor should be hot dipped due to the much harder surface of a hot dip coating. But for touchups, and for annual maintenance, this works great.

Re: Regalvanize an Anchor

FWIW,

With anchors that are used daily, mere cold galvo does not last long in my experience. Think about it: if the original actual metallic zinc gets worn off, how is any sort of paint expected to survive? At any rate, has never worked well for us.

We have had all our anchors re-galvo'd each time we have had the chain done. This gets around the minimum weight issues, and then it does not cost much at all for the anchor(s). If you only need the anchor done, find someone else that is having chain done and add your anchor to the lot.

Cheers,

Jim
