I have given up on chain hooks. I have switched to a dyneema soft shackle-works great

Love my M1 chain hook. No complaints.

Same experience here. Never slipped off. When we bought our Mantus hook, the plastic piece wasn't part of the assembly. They did send us one when I requested a couple years later, but I never got around to installation.

The design on the M1 doesn't need a gate unless your snubber let out too far and is dragging on the seabed. Even then, while a claw would fail (and the M2 did fail for me when the "keeper" broke), the M1 makes it really hard for the chain to release on it's own, even without a gate, which is why it's my preferred chain hook.

Reminder- a snubber needs to be long enough to provide stretch in fresh conditions, which is hard to do from the bow without the chain hook dragging on the bottom, so running a long enough line to the midship or aft cleat allows for enough length to dampen shock loads and keep the chain hook off the bottom.

What makes Pete's posts unusual is there's no mention of an attempt to call Mantus for a solution.

It's our experience that an honest manufacturer or supplier will offer to help out. Mantus is offering a replacement part for free. Clearly they want to help.

Buy any good quality chain hook. A retainer is not necessary if you do the following:

Keep a slack loop in the chain between the windlass and hook. The weight of this loop and the weight of the anchor chain from hook to anchor keeps the chain in the hook.

The Anchors can be purchased in two different materials..

Hot Dip Galvanized steel, and Stainless Steel

Re: Ha! I finally, after 5 years, had a chance to use my Mantus M1 Chain Hook... and.

I contacted Mantus to purchase a replacement strap and they sent it free of charge. However, I don't expect the new one to last much longer than the original because it's the same/similar design.

We tried a velco strap at the recommendation of a few threads on this forum but in the Chesapeake it came up covered in mud. The Mantus catamaran bridle is rather long as well, which I do REALLY like, but drops the hook on the bottom. I'm also concerned dragging it around on the bottom could open the velcro. I've since learned to shorten it in shallow water, and let it out if the wind picks up. Still need a better solution for the strap.

But our real issue is how large the hook is - it barely fits through our roller housing and often jams. Because the roller is inboard essentially under the trampoline I can't access the chain beyond the roller. I consider this more an issue of the boat design than the Mantus hook

For us the simplest solution will likely be to use a different method, such as a Tylaska shackle (which we initially replaced with the Mantus), or something else entirely.

Curious as to why this question is never asked about other equipment in this forum?
