Mantus Chain Hook Review

Mantus Chain Hook | MantusAnchors

Just curious if anyone has used this particular hook and what they thought of it. My primary question would be do you have good success with it staying on (as advertised) after the tension is unloaded.

I am aware most / a lot of people like to tie on rather than use a hook but I am curious if this newest mouse trap is better than the previous ones.

Thanks

I have one. It does work as it should, never has fallen off in my experience. Go for it

Works for me. I don't it'll come off with simple slack, but we watch going over the anchor/bow roller to make sure it stays on.

You might consider a simple soft shackle. Stronger, no dings out of the hull and basically foolproof.

How to use that?

How fast can you undo it?

I just loop it through a chain link and the snub line, which has a thimble on the end. Can't come off under tension (or not), and when it comes back aboard and the weight is off, you can slip it off not quite as fast as undoing a chain hook, but certainly faster than a shackle.

Just note on using hook should take off before roller and put on below roller

Which is one of the reasons the soft shackle seems a significant improvement, at least for us. You can attach it on deck, remove it on deck with no issues.

Plus it is stronger.

As Jimbo says you can make them yourself. If you buy one they cost around $30-40. If you make them the key is to beat the heck out of the stopper knot so its hard as a rock when you're done. The ones you buy from WM aren't so great. Look on YouTube for instructions and videos of tests. They are really strong.

I made one based on a YouTube video, no problem--but then I'm pretty comfortable with knots, splicing, etc. I made several for friends after that. Given the ridiculous commercial price, it would be worth finding someone in the area to show you how for a beer or three.

You can make Soft Shackles yourself or buy them on ebay for $15.
They are easy to make and cheap to buy.
