Cost of re galvanizing

Can members provide their experiences with the cost of re galvanzing an anchor?

I was quoted $150 for a 36# anchor or 3 for $400. I have no idea if this is low, high or correct.

Could ypu provide the galvanizers' information as well once you've figured it out?

I have the dreaded Acco G4 "rusts out in 4 months" chain

Re: Cost of re galvanizing

It depends on how they have priced it.

But I can get a steel trailer HDG for about .80/lb locally if they do the prep work (sand blast and strip), or .35/lb if I do the prep. On the other hand you are talking about a very small job, and they may be charging a 'make it worth our time' fee for such a small project.

Re: Cost of re galvanizing

An anchor or a few hundred feet of chain is small stuff for a galvanizer. They will wait until they have a large enough batch to do the job. If you want it done in a few days it will likely cost you a lot of money. That price you stated sound very high to begin with. Talk to large welding shops and steel suppliers in your area and find out who they use. I think you can find better prices. Good Luck. ____Grant.

Re: Cost of re galvanizing

I was quoted $100 for similar sized anchor. They said it was their minimum fee. If I got more in the order the price for the anchor would likely approach $35. Foufou

There is usually a minimum at galvanizers--you would save some money if you got a bunch of friends anchors together and did them in one batch.

Why not sand down to bare metal and apply several coats of epoxy resin and coats of quality metal paint.Should last a long time, and touch them up when required.Better than spending hundreds of $.

That was my experience when I researched costs to redo chain in Australia. And as I live on an island the cost of freight made it even worse.

To answer your question... yes the price is high.

Galvanizing goes by weight.

I have to get galvanizing done often in small quantity. I learned a lot from my first experience. Then I discussed this with my local welder and now all of the work goes through that way. We plan and accumulate until we reach the minimum of 1000 lbs. and I only pay the going rate of whole sale. Very reasonable. The price can vary. Shop around. Regards, Roger.

Re: Cost of re galvanizing

It's an industrial / commercial process and so it's not set up for an odd piece. Check.

Thanks for the replies!

320 FEET of 7/16 chain sand blast stripped - $80.00 in a chain tumbler; Armor galvanize $180.00. Find a franchise near you. For anchors, make sure the process retort will handle the dimensions. US Navy uses this for aircraft hold-down chains.

Re: Cost of re galvanizing

In the Houston area, most galvanizers won't mess with the relatively small job of anchors. There was one, K-T Galvanizing, in Katy, Texas which would handle such a small batch job. The cost was $300 for two anchors. I could have included several other anchors to split the cost, but I needed the job done quickly.
