Mercury 4hp 4-Stroke

Just put the dingy together, removed the Merc from the stern rail where it sat for the winter and it started first pull! Problem is that cooling water just trickled and then stopped. Owners manual is useless. Any ideas and hints at what and where to look? Thanks.

Re: Mercury 4 hp 4 stroke

we had a 3.3 hp and when it clogged we tried and were successful in using a turkey baster and forcing the water out the other way -it worked - try maybe just a bit of a clog
just what worked for us

Agree with impellor but where is it? Does it look like a diesel impellor?

Re: Mercury 4 hp 4 stroke

Rex, yes.

However, before you pull the thing apart have you checked to see if the tell tail is blocked rather than the water pump being stuffed. The tell tail will be supplied by a thin hose from the block. Pull it off from the block and run the engine, if water comes out, try a thin piece of wire up the tube.

If you have to replace the water pump it will at the gearbox / engine join in the lower leg. Normally sits on the ling vertical drive leg and covered with a stainless steel cover which bolts down on to the gearbox.

Grease the drive shaft top splines before you bolt it together again or risk a drama in years to come.

For what it is worth, the Merc has a flush system. I bought it from the dealer for $17 (worth about $0.50), you hook it up, attach a garden hose and blow the system clean. It worked, all is now good. Must have been debris or a barnacle in the system.
