Going ahead with the registration was the best plan. No matter where you go you will be able to avoid most hassle. BTW here in Texas a dink and motor needs two registrations, one for the dink and one for the motor (unless it is rowed and under 14 feet.)

I used the WM stencil and if I had it to do over I would buy the stecils and a sharpie from a Target.

CSY--Probably the stencils were cheaper at Target than WM.

Roger, good idea.

I am all for cheap stencils, but would think that paint made for the purpose would be a better solution than a Sharpie. ?

Open-minded however...

I think the sharpie is used to outline the letters and numbers before paint is applied. I know my stick on letters want to curl off the material. I was thinking of using them as stencils . I like the sharpie idea for outlining. I am going to used paint.

Sorry I've been away from internet access but scallywag is spot on. The stencils are cheaper and since it is suggested to do the outline in Sharpie anyway (to prevent bleeding) it makes the letters look more consistent. Normally I want a crappy looking dink so it was not big deal to me. I only repainted it because it was from Florida and had the "T/T boatname" letter on the side.

I go with the sharpie solution, and I used my dremel to etch the numbers into the outboard mounting plate (it's made of wood). A nice pink (or some other horrid color) spritz to your outboard (not just the top cover) makes your dink rather unstealable as well.
