Re: THE ULTIMATE CRANKER

Wait.. I made a mistake.

I have this one:

I don't have the "two speed" version.

I did not have the set screw hole put in the one I had made. Only the center lock screw. But as I said, I did Loc-Tite both sets of threads.

So far, nothing has come loose.

FWIW, to loosen Loc-Tite, just heat it. Might take some heat depending on how much was used.

As far as use, it was bought to furl the gennie. Which is/was a royal PITA with out a winch. The drill makes it a piece of cake.
But I now find myself using it for other winch work. But never used it to climb the mast.

Duration of charge. I've gone through several days on one battery.

But full disclosure, beings all the other tools on the boat are Dewalt 20v tools, I used one of Dewalt's 20v to 18v adaptors and an old Milwalkee 18v Fuel Battery to make an adapter to use the Dewalt 20v battery on the Milwalkee drill. And I'm using a 5Ah Dewalt battery.

So my mileage may be different than yours.
This is my drill which appears to be similar to yours but mine is called the 'Hole Hawg' and looks like both are 18V.

What size/model boat do you have and do you use the drill to hoist the main?

Re: THE ULTIMATE CRANKER

There are actually several, although most are square, but that doesn’t seem to matter.
All I know of except the Ultimate cranker just fit into the chuck, not saying that is good or bad, but it pretty much does guarantee a universal fit, and only costs a lb or maybe two at most.

The Ultimate Cranker folk also have a 'base' model that fits into the chuck but I noted a forum member using one lost it overboard when it worked loose in the chuck and then opted for an Ultimate cranker.

Have you perchance priced an electric winch up grade kit and installation costs?

Re: THE ULTIMATE CRANKER

As i have posted before, I use one of the winch bits that fits into the chuck. At first I twice broke the locking screws that secure the chuck to the shaft. I then installed the chuck with red loc--tite and have had no further breakage... and we use it in reverse frequently. So far,no problems with it coming loose in the chuck, either, but we tighten it carefully and vigorously.

IP-35 and no with the main hoisting.
I have a plastic track that slides into the mast slot, that the main sail slides in. It is easier and faster to hand over hand the main halyard than winch it.

I have two of them, with ultimate Crankers on them, I have spun both of them off, breaking the set screw doing so and buggering up the threads in the Ultimate bit, thankfully the angle adapters Metal is very strong and has survived only requiring a die to be run down it to remove the metal from the bit.
I have since then red loctited both on, and so far so good, but I’m also more careful in reverse, and if it starts binding down in reverse, stop, this thing has enormous torque and something will give.
How I busted them was I have a small one speed winch for furling my main, it would require excess force at times, so I have since learned to wrap the line once around that small winch and lead it over to a larger two speed and use it and not load the Milwaukee up so hard.

No, but I build some of that sort of stuff myself and have winch electrification on my list of future projects. Thinking along the lines of a gear or chain reduction in an alloy enclosure to be fitted as a base under the winch with an enclosed DC motor sticking up off to the side.

Finally got a/this reply from the Cranker folk via Ebay .............

'eBay
New message from: wwwthecranker (162Turquoise Star)
You definitely do not want to use that drill with this item. I goes too fast and does not have the torque that the Milwaukee 28 volt drill has. Yes the Milwaukee 0721 drill is still in production and available through me or many other venders.'

I intended to buy one of these but found a piece of hardened key stock with one end turned round in a lathe works very well.
