Termination for Yacht Braid Lines

The item illustrated is a Spelter Socket for use as a termination for wire lines. The line is passed through the centre then unwound to form a broom which is pulled back inside the socket and filled with an epoxy or molten zinc.

My question is, does anyone know of a similar item for use with synthetic ropes such as yacht braid?

There are similar looking fittings for the terminal ends of some types of synthetic rigging. But as to how they work, & how the rigging is attached to them, you'd have to do some study. You might start with Navtec, & or Colligo Marine.


What kind of application are you looking to use such kinds of terminals on standard cordage for?

I used to use mixed wire/braid halyards but changed over to all braid a few years ago. Since then I have had a couple of braid line splices fail under load so have stopped doing them and now taper the inner cord, turn the line back and do sewn bindings to make the end eyes. However these need to be redone regularly to insure UV degradation is not ruining their integrity.


An epoxy fastened metal socket would most probably have longer life and mixing and pouring in a small volume of two pack much less fiddly than either splices or turn back, stitched and bound eyes.
