Here's how I see it. It is a 25' boat. It's pretty old, and you seem pretty sure the PO hasn't done much to it for a while, and you want to get on the water and enjoy it.

Warning, the chain plates may need a competent rigger's attention; but, other than that, I'd go with the chain option. We've used chain to lengthen a bit of rigging, and did a number of ocean miles with it that way.

Sometimes it's hard to find your way between the boundaries of "so safe it isn't fun any more," and being realistic.

If you're going to be daysailing, close to shore, just how much trouble are you personally (not all the worry warts) anticipating?

Sure, a whole new rig might be nice, but you thought you already did that, right? Now, you want to make it work. Good. Figure in the turnbuckles, and use chain to make up the difference so that you can get the whole rig reasonably taught, and then get out on the water, and delightfully, go sailing. It's easy to get in too deep and over-worry about things.

You could make a feature of it, put some short Dyneema lashings on it above the bottlescrews and if anyone asks about them tell them its an important safety feature that all boats should have to aid you cutting free a rig in case of dismasting before it sinks you. Then ask them how they would approach the same task in a big seaway.

You could also make up some covers from fabric, hose or tube to cover the whole lot.

Ann T. hit the nail on the head. It is a day sailor, up and down SE fl. I doubt it will go to the Bahamas. I'm not setting out for any world travels or records, just some fun with my lady. However that being said I don't believe in doing things half ass either. I always tell my guys if you don't have time to the job right the first time, when will you have time? I have an appointment with the sail loft this afternoon to go over everything in person and come up with a reasonable solution. I will keep you posted on the saga.

Nothing wrong with chain. Was used for many many years. Not elegant, but as mentioned it's an old cheap boat.

Well, when you see what a beautiful job Fishsail is doing bringing the old cheap boat back to life, you'll feel the pain of the short shrouds! After further thought and considering you are so close and $ are probably really low, I'd say a couple of toggles should make up the 2 inches missing on the uppers and then links of chain or flat stock will work for the 9" gaps, then cover them with extra long, extra beautiful, turnbuckle covers for now until you have saved up enough to get new rigging.

Great news. I just got back from Mack sails and they are going to make up new shrouds for me at no charge even though it was my measurements they went by. They actually insisted on doing it right. This is a perfect example of why to use a stand up company. Thanks to all at Mack sail

REasonable thoughts, Don, except that toggles are kind dear and chain is cheap and does the same job... so I'd use chain in both places. If looks are important, some nice shiny s/s chain of appropriate size would be good.

But Mack Sails have solved the problem in a different way, so all of our theorizing is for naught!
