Good rigging work in Asia or Australia

Hi there

We are looking at buying a boat which needs some work on the rig and sails.

One option is to get it done in Thailand or Malaysia, or we could go for closer to home and get it done in Australia or New Zealand.

Does anyone have any experience of getting rigging or sails work done in Thailand, Malaysia, Australia or New Zealand, and can they suggest which is the best? Obviously we want good quality work but a good price is also a factor.

Thanks for your help.

These 3 are all good - I know them. There are others "working" as riggers in the region but not professional, no swage presses etc.
There may be other good people in Malaysia but I do not know of them.
Good luck

We are currently in Phuket, Thailand and are doing a major refit including rigging and sails. Very good prices using Precision Shipwright Services and sails. Very professional. Also great teak, cabinetry work and paint! I found Australia very expensive. Cheers

Thank you for those replies, we will definitely be looking into those companies if we do buy the boat.

Re: Good rigging work in Asia or Australia

If you're buying the boat in SE Asia, get the rig done there, and the new sails from there will be serviceable. [ If you're picky about sails, you may not be happy. ] If you're buying the boat in Queensland, we have a rigger there that we trust, built our new mast when our first Insatiable was dismasted, and we hired him to help when we hauled our mast out this year for a number of jobs. His work is good, but he is a bit over-subscribed, and our "a week" time estimate turned out to be fulfilled in 6 weeks. PM me for a name, if you're interested. It'll cost more in Aus., but if you lost a rig on your way to SE Asia, that would be VERY expensive, and sometimes someone gets hurt.

Re: Good rigging work in Asia or Australia

Best to deal with the critical stuff like masts, rigging, and sails before you leave. You have a far better selection of talented people in Oz or NZ. That assumes you're buying the boat in one of those countries. Otherwise you're limited to the expats abroad and sometimes they may charge the same rates as they did back home since they have a captive market.

In countries with steep import duties you end up paying a lot more for parts.

One thing I would get done in Thailand or Malaysia is the cosmetics. They have excellent carpenters and painters.

You will find excellent riggers and sailmakers in Auckland, NZ.
