Mine will recharge a battery that is completely dead ( only one led on) in under two hours. As far as pulling up sails I can raise both Main and Mizzen with no problem using the slow speed on the two speed winches, and still have enough power to sail all day, mind you I don't tack that much ( maybe 6-10 tacks) and still have enough power to furl the jib at the end of the day. I did get an extra battery so I always have one charged, but when I bought it they were giving a deal on the second battery. Here in the Northeast i saw them in homedepot but I didn't check the price, I would never buy one from a marine outlet as the mark up is outrageous.

Hi Guys, I just ordered a Milwaukee 28V drill for my winches (mostly main halyard). I keep hearing about the retaining screw on the chuck shearing off in reverse. Does anyone have firsthand experience with this, and does it mean you can only use in forward? Seems ashamed since winches have better gearing counter clockwise. Please let me know if anyone can advise. Thanks Mark

I did have that happen once when hauling a 210 Lb. Helper up the mast to repair a wind indicator. Milwaukee fixed it under warranty and I never had an issue on the winches. I used it in both directions on occasion but for 99% of the time only use it in one direction. If you think about electric winces, they pretty much go in one direction.

Thanks for the quick reply. So it seems the drill is plenty strong in forward for most uses. After it was repaired did you try in reverse? How do you like the setup in general? M

It was quite some time ago when we had to have it repaired and yes used it many times after that in reverse. In general it worked very well for us for mostly raising sails or adjusting sheets.

We have the earlier--18 V--version of the drill which had the same problem with broken chuck screws. Replacements are very inexpensive so I bought a handful. But, I also learned that by thoroughly tighening the retaining screw with a little dab of Lock-Tight to secure it will help prevent the screw breaking if one simply reverts to hand cranking the last few pounds of tension when the unit lugs down. With that, we haven't broken a screw since I bought the replacements!

I have it and use it sometimes. Doesn't always do the job for the last foot or so up on mast. It is big and heavy. The case is large and gets in the way below. All in all, just so so.

Do you have the 28V version? These are supposed to raise a 200lb person up the mast.

I find the chuck tends to loosen up if you run the drill in reverse. Forward is low speed on my Lewmars and it grinds faster than I can turn the winch, so that works for me.

That recon shows 'out of stock'. I checked on recon with a retailer and they said it could be 6 months before they get any in stock. I'd check on delivery before counting on anything.

Got notified yesterday it was shipped fedex, and I should have by Fri. I ordered it about 10 days ago, thinking, if it didn't come in a month I'd cancel. Got an e-mail yesterday that the drill came in sooner than anticipated
