I just took delivery of a new asym. With the tack set to fly the sail about 4'; above my bow, it is still 6' short of maximum hoist. The sailmaker says that's OK. That 4-6' is needed to accomodate a sock (which I don't have). I question his statement. Your thoughts?

I'm not sure what your sailmaker was implying as a sock will only go up as far as the head of the sail where the halyards attached. The halyard should go to the top under most circumstances.

Sounds like it is too short for your boat.

I'm guessing he built the sail,,, if I'm right he screwed up the measurements and now making up excuses.. Just saying or thinking out loud

A sock only requires ~ 6"-12" plus hanging down on the head a few inches. Sounds all wrong to me. Get a second opinion, then return. Did you specify an allowance for a sock?

It is normal to ease the head off the masthead under certain circumstances, but only 12-18" as a general rule.
