I dont know how much it is to have them tested but in OZ we have a 10yr limit on BBQ gas bottles,not 5yrs like in NZ,there is a date of manafacture on the top and Id say its the same everywhere,funny about the 5yr difference.mudnut.

Ummmm, well I guess I could have that wrong. Kiwi's! anyone know for sure???? I wouldn't have thought too much of a difference between Oz and here, seeing as we adopt many of the same regs.

Wheels,when I told the missus(Jo's a fellow Kiwi)She just said,"Maybe we're a bit more safety concience back home!"Here is a thought,After 10yrs we gotta get rid of ours,after testing do you get another 5yrs of use?If so It seems the only strange thing is that you guys are getting slugged X amount of dollars for ya 5 extra yrs.Maybe Hangi's are cheaper in the long run.Being BBQ born and bred I must say I really like a good Hangi.Go the Cowboys!!!!!!Mudnut.

No I was wrong. It is 10yrs. I asked the guy at the filling station this morning. And yes, after a re-test, you get another 10.
There is also a filling station in some Citys, I know Christchurch has one, were you don't own a bottle. You just bring in the empty and pick up a full. So you never have to worry about re-tests. So I guess we have some "ups" as well.

Its interesting that on the video of the fire test on the tank there is a jump between about 2.5 minutes and 3minutes someting which is just where the tank ruptures. After the cut, the gas is burning with a nice jet of flame. You dont see the actual breakthorugh. I wonder if that is because the initial breakthrough resulted in a spill of liquid gas which was a bit too spectacular/scary for the public?

(not implying the product is anything other than safe/standards compliant, just commenting on the marketing I guess)

Incidently in the UK, you dont own the bottles, you just hand and empty one in and get a pre-filled replacement. So you dont have to worry about age or testing, but would hinder the introduction of new tanks such as this.

"You just bring in the empty and pick up a full." In the US, that's normal in locales where gas *storage* and sales are legal--but filling stations are not. Some places also offer it at filling stations, for folks who prefer not to wait the few minutes for a fill. Or the long line on BBQ holidays full of dads who forgot to keep a spare tank home.<G>

Propane bottle exchanges are becoming common in Canada, which is not too usefull if you are heading out into the Pacific. Not to many canadian tire stores out there. The one coat of cheap enamel paint on the exchange steel tanks or new tanks won;t last long at sea. With any new steel tank on a boat , you have to ,at the first opportunity, sandblast them and give them several coats of cold Gaslvanizing spray primer. or they will very soon begin to rust like hell.

These are basicly the same design that has been used in CNG cars @ 3600 psi for several years now. They are virually bullet proof to a 30-06. You have to shoot the brass valve off the top to get them to leak.

I plan to buy a couple when my old tanks expire........................_/)

"You get what you pay for " was used to sell a lot of junker used cars. Ony the extremely gullible believe that line. It assumes there is no such thing as a deal or a ripoff. Consumer groups would be interested in your theory that all you have to do to determine the quality of anything is read the price tag. It will save them a lot of wasted money doing product research. If you want to improve the quality of anything, you don't have to build it better, just raise the price.
