Converting Diesel Tank to Water

I would like to know any ideas what you would do to change this stainless tank over to water. Could glass it out or possibly acid dip it to clean, any thought. It holds approx 40 gal and built into place but can be removed

I think this is an idea I would only consider if you want your water to ALWAYS for the rest of your life on this particular boat taste mildly like diesel. That said SS is pest cleaned with Oakite, Citrisolve, or through a passivation process. If you can open the top you could put in a potable membrane whihc would be fine.

I would only suggest converting this tank if you
are near destitute or want to use it as a wash down tank.

I really doubt that you would ever get the diesel smell out.
BUT....
When was a kid we used to weld gas/oil tanks on motorbikes after steaming them for a couple of hours. You would need to take the tank out of the boat and build a big steam source. By which time you might as well just replace the tank.

Do not use an old fuel tank for potable water, you could used it as a holding tank though.....Allan

you could remove the tank, cut all the pannels apart, steam clean, sand blast, polish and then re-weld the tank and re-install.
