replacing th sterntube

Hi everyone
I am at the monment removing the sterntube from my yacht. But I need to know if I need to replace the sterntube bracket as well as the sterntube. Or can I build up the old one with metal compound around the sterntube. Any advice about fitting the sterntube on a fin keeled would be appreciated.
