Not sure how to pm you. Did you get my email regarding the service manual for the hurth transmission?

I do not rebuild Hurths, ZFs or Kanzakis gear boxes.
Check out www.foleymarine.com re: $1 per hour gears.
They last a little over 1,000 hours and cost about $1,200 for a new one.
Get a Borg warner Velvet Drive or Twin Disc, they last a lot longer.

Re: Hurth HBW 150 Rebuild

I have rebuilt several of these trannys... i never buy zf bearings or seals because a thirnd party makes them ...why pay 4 times as much... for the bearings i write down the bearing number and call my local NAPA auto parts store the seals i measure look up the part number from a pdf file and call napa with the number... they are simple trannies and usually fail due to lack of use... the input shaft bearing is highest in the case and rusts first... rust then wears out.. when winterizing your boat the tranny should be COMPLETELY filled to the top ....then drained in the spring and topped to the correct level ..

the only bearings that may be difficult to find are the 2 small carrier bearings that the 2 gears ride on... and i have seen one of these fail also

Re: Hurth HBW 150 Rebuild

Sadly the boating world ,like the machine tool world is based on massive mark-ups on standard parts.
A bearing supplier once, not that many years ago sourced me two 750mm od Timken bearings at list minus 70%!
No-one ever pays the list prices -except the little guy at the end of the chain
it pays every time to get the bearing no and go straight to a supplier .
Another point is ,that often other bearings configurations will work -we often see units with double row ball bearings later upgraded to rollers by OEMs
But the ball units still give long service so its always workchecking the sizes and load ratings of such items

Re: Hurth HBW 150 Rebuild

I know this is late, but I figured I'd add it just in case someone else runs into this thread. I've rebuilt my HBW150, and posted a long description of the process here. I hope it turns out to help someone else.

Thanks! Very nice write-up. I'll be referencing this as I look into my HBW150 next winter. The project list is too long to even think about it this winter.

Re: Hurth HBW 150 Rebuild

Not much chance I'll make a PDF -- it already took me many hours just to put together the web page, not to mention taking all the photos when I really wanted to just get the stupid thing done. I don't mean to be too selfish, but I'd rather be working on my *next* project rather than making this one even easier for you. --John

Re: Hurth HBW 150 Rebuild

If anyone decides they'd like a new transmission or help with rebuilding, I have had excellent results and response from Jim at Federal Marine Transmissions in the Chicago area. Marine Transmissions, Velvet Drive, Paragon, marine transmission parts, <marine transmissions>

Don't get me started on Foley. I wouldn't do business with them ever again.

Re: Hurth HBW 150 Rebuild

My wife and I are new cruisers that are about to rebuild the transmission for our new (to us) 47' voyaging sailboat. We plan to go to Antarctica soon and need everything working at 100% so we are currently refitting after having sailed the boat up to Gloucester, MA from Grenada.
I'm hoping that someone here may have obtained the manual for the HBW150. If so, would you mind passing it along to us? It would be very much appreciated.

Re: Hurth HBW 150 Rebuild

Go to google, type in < zf hurth marine transmission manual > and you'll find everything.
If you want to do such a trip, like you mension, and you don't know the history of the boat, I would go for a new one. Out of question.

I would replace that gear with new, there are too many short lived hurth hbwxxx rebuild failures to count, mine included.
