Sorry, but I don't completely understand your comment. What do you mean by "rebuild failures"? Are you saying that people have tried to rebuild them and failed to execute or that they were rebuilt, put into service and then the transmission failed shortly there after?

Thank you.

Rebuilt, put into service and suffered other failures in a short period of time. There are of course exceptions, but in my experience the rebuilds of these little gears are not easy to get right the first time.

Re: Hurth HBW 150 Rebuild

Hi Strongmonty and Sailmonkey,
I toke apart my gearbox Hurth, ZF, HBW 150. Nice mecanicaly build, good construcion and quality. I measured the thickness of the disk's 51 a d 52 and they where like new.
Although I ordered new ones in the States and put the box together.
Failed!! Toke the whole thing apart again, controller everything twice, I didn't made a mistake. Together again, and....... failed.
I bought a new one, for a good price and very good price to ship to me in Malaysia.
But I don't like it not to know the reason. Toke the box apart, the only problem could be the parts 57 up to 64.
I ordered this parts in the States, asembled the box and it still works fine in a powerboat. Sold it for the price of the parts I bought. Everyone happy
At that time I was in Malaysia and would sail home to Belgium, via South-Africa. I've never regred the money I spend on the new one, shipping and everything-total- less than 2000 €.
What is the value of a gearbox on a trip like you would do, honestly.
And believe me, I'm not rich.
Willy

I had one rebuilt by an authorize dealer, lasted 70 hours. Originally it lasted 39 years, thought it was the way to go. For $400 more you have a new one, built to a higher rating. Only rebuild if you sail locally and have TowBoat US.
