Greasing stuffing box

My prop shaft stuffing box has a remote greaser on it.The stuffing box is packed with a white teflon packing.
Does this type of packing need to be greased?

As far as I can gather the answer is yes. I have similar packing with a grease nipple feed. All advice is to keep the grease supplied to the packing.

I would be careful of what grease I used. Teflon may not be compatible with some hydro carbon type. Don't know--jus sayin !

"Dripless" shaft glands do not use water for lubrication and therefor require (in most cases) grease. Waterproof wheel bearing grease is normally a good choice, but as usual, it is best to follow mfg specs.

Teflon(R) (PTFE) is insoluble in just about anything short of Hydrofluoric Acid, and is unaffected by any hydrocarbon based products.

I usually give 1 1/2 turns to the greaser after every trip or say 6 hrs engine running time.

Might get a saucer full of drips in 6 hrs engine running time so happy with that

I endorse Tynesider's advice. Important not to over-grease or you'll exclude all the cooling seawater and risk the stuffing box overheating and scoring the propshaft. Better to have a regular drip than none at all!

Some years ago I packed a stuffing box with a goretex based product sold by West Marine. They also sold a special teflon based grease for use with that packing. Applied once at installation, never renewed in years of usage. The gland ran cool, didn't drip and was a great success. You might just have a look in their catalog for current products.
