The only additional work is emptying the container from time to time. For a couple people, the solids container only needs emptying every 4 -6 weeks or so. This involves pulling the container, throwing the contents overboard (which by this point looks and smells like dirt), and putting the container back. Takes 5 minutes.

My head was having problems with one brand. i checked with the tests and found the Charmin Ultra Soft. This brand breaks apart quick, and haven't had any problems since..

I don't see any cause to consider it an obsession to point out the simple features of a composting head. Certainly, it's no more obsessive that pointing out the ease of pushing a button.

I don't have a composting head or a Lectra San or a standby bucket, but I'll appreciate any of this shared information.

CC45 I can't help but wonder if you work for kimberly clark or whomever makes charmin. For standard residential use there is nothing worse than charmin ultra. Repeatedly clogs sewers and toilets that have run free for 40 years. I guess a pressurized system is different.

I just use any 'recycled' toilet paper, two ply, and I've not in five years ever had a problem with my electric macerator and gravity fed holding tank.

Yep, composters like TP, don't clog, don't stink, zero maintenace.

Local charter boat recently hit a rock, which fractured an inside seam on the large and very full holding tank.
The whole interior was ankle-deep in stinking brown slurry. They'll need a flame-thrower to get the bilges clean.

I'm not keen at all on composting toilets on boats, but 'no' it's not just poop. Its soil and no longer harbours many of the pathogens such as Ecoli.

Mind you, I wouldn't go tasting the stuff

You are aware that the vast majority of boats simply dump their raw crap overboard ... right? At least with a composting head the material is somewhat degraded.

Well, I will confess to having a couple of buckets, but they are used to hold some collected fresh water for rinsing after saltwater bathing or sometimes soapy water for washing the deck. They have never had a role related to waste of any kind.

Ok a composting head is approved for use in a no discharge area. But once you dump it overboard, you are discharging affluent and not legal in a no discharge zone.
