Agreed, but this thought is like addressing that big taboo, ...population growth.

Never be TOO smug (like M from Montreal) when you brag to your friends about your carbon footprint because of your "clean diesel".
Is it true that to achieve the level of pollution required by the EPA the VW’s burned more fuel in doing so and the additional pollution accomplished greater fuel economy?

It's easy to combat population growth, educate women. It's a known fact that as women's education rises their desire to have babies drops.

As I understand it, the Bosch fuel system software could detect when a pollution/economy test was being done, and adjusted itself to produce acceptable figures. In 'real' driving, the software would allow for more power and responsiveness, but at the cost of reduced economy and more pollution.

Details here.

Another knock on diesel cars is that diesels emit particulates, and these particulates are now known to be more hazardous to health than previously thought.

[you know, it's funny/sad to hear people accuse climate scientists of cheating, faking data for grants etc, when it's so clear-cut that big business is the entity without ethics, whose responsibility is only to shareholders, who have the clearest motivation for cheating like the VW thing, and for promoting fake narratives like the myths countering the finding of AGW. It's like some people have never actually met a scientist, or have any clue what the academic life and income are actually like, or what motivates them]

Works in the West for sure, but another ideology has different ideas along with another continent and here comes your environmental disaster squared.

Couple that with 83 average IQ and watch out.

You enjoy that Tahoe; your kids and your grandkids probably won't get the chance to do likewise.
Autos are a multi-national industry in that many countries have automobile manufacturers which design and build cars. Canada does not design or manufacture their own automobiles. They assemble the automobiles of other countries.

Sure some parts are made elsewhere but, as you stated, Japanese cars assembled in Canada are still considered Japanese cars not Canadian cars.

Canada is dependent on others designing cars and then them being allowed to build some of them.

Canada is not a player in the automobile industry. Heck, even South Korea is an international force in the car world. But at least you have your high taxes so you have that going for you.

My kids (adults) and grand-kids are quite excited that their city which "scientists" predicted to be underwater years ago is just fine.

As long as I keep my energy use under that of say, Al Gore, etc, I should be considered an example of how to do it. The Tahoe doesn't make a dent in that so good to go.
