Range Needed to Get from Miami to Trinidad

We are getting close to buying a trawler for retirement and plan on cruising from Miami to Trinidad, island hopping along the way. I was wondering what others think the boats minimum range should be to safely get between fuel stops. By only eyeballing the charts, I was thinking a boat with a 600 mile range would work. Any suggestions are much appreciated.
Thanks! Dick&Kathy

Re: Range Needed to Get from Miami to Trinidad

600 nm range should be adequate with room to spare. The longest hop from fuel stop to fuel stop if I recall is Clarence Town Long Island to the Turks and Caicos +/- 250 nm. Having extra range will give you a cushion in case you get to a marina that is out of fuel or want to cruise the neighborhood before proceeding to the next stop.

Re: Range Needed to Get from Miami to Trinidad

We just returned from our 1.5 years in the Caribbean in our DeFever 50' CMY all way to Grenada. (Didn't go to Trinidad as martial law had been implemented the entire time we were there and figured we did not need the hassle of that.) Wonderful trip. Full details, including where we anchored; where we found charts, other 'local knowledge'; where we fueled; etc etc is contained in my blog: Finally Fun! Click on the Caribbean section and find all the details. A # of boaters have already followed our 'breadcrumbs' down..... Best of luck to you.

PS Our DeFever is now for sale in case you are interested. Go to For Sale: DeFever 50 Cockpit Motor Yacht Trawlers - USD 769,900 for all details; photos, etc. Be certain to click on all the tabs at the top to get it all.
