Is a 55 ton Travel Lift small in your area? That's the size lift the yard I use has that I have to back into.

I believe the one we need to back into is a 35ton. That said, this has a lot to do with boat size in relation to the lift.

Then if you back in, don't you have to drop your backstay?

Forestay, backstay...either way there's a wire pretty much the same size and shape coming out of the mast(s). Maybe a lower angle on the typical backstay, but there's still a stay up there.

When you are engineless and need to maneuver the boat, remember that before there was a starship using warp drives, warping the boat was the normal way to shift it around. Toss out a couple of lines, and manhandle it. No biggie.

The travel lifts 35 tons which I go to always have me back in. Even then I have to drop the twin backstays. When the bigger lift of 60 tons is available I still back in but don't have to release the back stays. It is relatively easy to drop the back stays. A lot easier than the forstay with the furling system on it. My boat is very manuverable so backing in is no problem. I single hand it always.

60 ton travel lift, no back stays to deal with, and yes have to back in if masts are up.
