When I bought Sabre Dance a couple years ago, the documentation from the broker mentioned a hidden compartment. He never showed me where it was, and I forgot to ask. The surveyor never found it either (which makes me wonder about the survey )

Anyway, I had to crawl into the lazarette yesterday to check out some wiring and the hydraulics for the steering. After about 10 minutes of cussing I managed to wriggle my way deep inside and get a good look all around. Noticed a box attached to the back of the rear cabin wall, in the galley area.

After I climbed out, I checked the galley and removed the pots n pans from a locker in that area. Inside I found a set of screws at the top edge of the rear wall, which I removed. The plate drops down and inside I found 4 bottles of booze, a spare set of docs for the boat, and a baggie with about a hundred dollars US and about 35 bucks worth of canadian bills. WHOOHOOO! Sorta takes the sting out of losing my mainsail furling gear less than a month after I bought the boat.

Hell the rum is even my brand!

My only memorable find was a long forgotten female sexual stimulation device wrapped in a towel complete with rusted batteries. The funny thing, the broker,buyer,surveyor and seller (widow) were aboard at the time. After it spilled onto the cabin floor all us males turned our heads at the same time and looked at the widow who was flushed red. It was a little unsettling until the surveyor explained it was not a required USCG equipment item.

Makes me think I am lucky to be an Ozzie. The thought of guns and things... makes me feel very tame. Mind you I did find a locker under the nav table after I had had the boat for 2 years stuffed full of flares and other bits and pieces.

I refer to my boat as the Tardis. For those not familiar with the BBC series DR Who this will not have any resonance.... From the outside the boat looks comparatively small but once inside it becomes huge. If you are trying to find anything it increases in dimensions.. a fourth dimension is added. I have attempted to empty the contents of the boat and then pack them into my ute thinking that it could be done in a trip only to find that four or five trips are involved and the garage and surrounds are stuffed to overflowing…

Sorta sounds like my town house. I lived in a 20x20 bachelor apartment for 23 years, and then decided to by a town house that was 1017 sqft. I am now living there, its stuffed to the gills and I still have boxes to unpack. I swear stuff warps in from that 4th dimension when I'm not looking.

My vessel is a 30ft steel ecalibur sloop,built in toronto CA in 1976.Have had it for 5yrs. Was told by PO that stuffing box was leaking a little.OK no prob. In the refit stage,i wanted a totally dry boat,and a little water was getting in,dribbling in from the stern. This boat has acess to the front of the diesel by removing the companionway stairs.To get at the back of it you have to take out the quarterbirth mattreses,and open doors that flip up to acess.Gettin at the stuffing box requires a double jointed dwarf..I wriggled in there on my back with a light..stuffing box was dry! Water coming in behind that..forcing my way back into an ever tighter space,i found it was getting in at a coroded weld,at the bottom of the cockpit drain.Above it there was a wrapped in rubber box..wired into place,in the damdest place,dont know how they managed to put there.

By superhuman wriggling,i got out of there and got some wirecutters,then went back in and cut it free.

Taking off the rubber wrap,i found an ancient and perfectly preserved 8mm movie projector and several rolls of film in cans..Plugged it in worked perfect..Pointed it at a chunk of white cardboard,attached and threaded a film,dimmed the lights...You guessed it..ancient porn..Black and white grainy film of orgies! Must have been made in the 40s,judging from thier hair,decor and clothes (when they were wearing any!)

Still have it..might fetch a fortune on e-bay!

Fixed and welded my leak,think my back has a permanent kink in it!

When we bought RG, the PO left a ton of stuff - tools, tapes, oilies and so on. We took everything off, not least because the leaking forepeak had to dry out, and the rewiring needed space. Then we inventoried and made a spreadsheet as we moved on board. Sounds organised so far!

But the boat eats things. She swallowed a sleeping bag for a year: yes, we bought a new one just before she spat it out again. She ate a precious pounamu necklace the other day, but fortunately it surfaced again in time for when it was needed. And as for tools and so on ...

Life on boats!

Loved the shower story - ours is a twist and turn affair,rather than a button, and we fitted it. But the big heads locker is full of things we forget we have.
