IMHO there in lies the achilles heal of the whole matter...It may just prove to be way to much boat for the lad.

::nods:: Which is why I'm hoping for the best for both of the young men, but I think Perham the elder has just doomed his son to either be dismissed as "Daddy bought you that record", or "the kid who choked with too much boat taking the high route", for the rest of his life.

I don't think you can hang that on a 16 yr old kid for the rest of his life? Maybe daddy bought you the record, but not choked. I don't think there are many men here with a desire to do what this kid is doing.

Another thought as I am typing. I am wondering just whose idea this was. Is Mike's dad like a one of those dads at little league shoving his kid around verbally, and trying to push him to be a star? Trying to live out his own fantasy through his son? In Zac's interview it seems it was Zac's idea.

Possibly in a decade we will see these 2 battling in A/C boats, or some other big races. Just a simple thought from a simple mind....lolololololol...i2f

Doesn't matter if anyone remembers it when he's older. You just know that someone is going to say it if he does need to bail, and he'll hear about it. And, in the back of his head, he'll always know that some people think that of him.

Not if he knows who he is. Just as you stated in another post. We try to raise, and give our kids confidence, and knowledge to move forward in life. If it's ever said I hope Mike can shrug it off, and realize the person is a jerk......i2f

I will agree with that i2f...being thin skinned myself I would never even think of tearing anyone down..and as mentioned not many of us here are even ready to tackle such a voyage let a lone the guts to.

My comments arnt to take anything away from the lad..just to pointing out the differences...and ear marks for success comparatively.

Sort of a David vs Goliath story unfolding here.

Both have a lot of moxie in my book.

I understand what you mean about D & G. Not only is Zac a homeboy of sorts, but I really liked his interviews, and his bio. He's the kind of kid I would want my daughter to date. If I had one that is....lololololol, so my fingers are crossed for him to do what he has set out to do.No matter how long he holds the record. Just sailing around the world is a great accomplishment for anyone. Let alone a 16 yr old!....i2f

Zac is earning some fame. There was half a page in the local paper about him yesterday here 200 miles inland in the Texas sticks. This is not sailing country but they admire his spunk and determination.
