My thoughts are with all north Queenslanders right now. I have family and friends in Cairns, they are well bunkered down but I worry about Cardwell and Townsville.

Anything can happen with a cyclone of this magnitude.

On a lighter note, I am guessing there will be no bananas for many months now.

Being in Victoria you can't possibly understand how poorly Qld. has been managed in recent years.

The foods in Victoria are off our news at present.

cheers

Yeh, with all the talk of Qld Government wanting to sell off Qld assets you would think they could talk it up a little.

No, but plenty of jobs in the construction industry.................

On a serious note just copied from govt website.

VERY DESTRUCTIVE winds with gusts up to 290 km/h are expected to develop between Cairns and Ingham during the next few hours as the cyclone approaches. These VERY DESTRUCTIVE winds will extend inland to the nearby ranges including the Atherton Tablelands.

Now where was that thread last week where the poster asked if it would be ok to cruise the Great Barrier Reef during Cyclone season??

Or the other comment from a cruiser 2 years ago that Cyclones are not as bad as Hurricanes. He lost his boat the next Cyclone season when he tested his thoughts.

Queensland has had a full year of it... and its just Febuary!

Damage reports nowhere near as bad as expected.

Yasi crossed the coast after midnight and the towns affected the most were Tully, Innisvail & Mission Beach but while there has been some damage from reports released so far damage appears to be nowhere near as bad as was anticipated.

For a Cat 5 cyclone of the size that it was this is truly amazing and almost unbelievable.

I have been watching the news reports on Foxtel throughout the night and this morning and the damage is no different to a normal strong storm and nothing like what one would expect from winds of 290Km per hour.

The local TV stations are asking for viewers to send in any footage that they have - it almost seems like the reporters are struggling to find any good footage of their own.

There are no reports of any injuries or deaths at this stage which is great news.

Yasi has now moved inland & has been downgraded to Cat 2.

Lightbulb cfn plotter

Recently on a voyage from Auckland to Suva i used the plotter to plot Cyclone WILMA's tracks, it would be handy to add weather symbols such as Cylones, fronts etc.. only the main ones and maybe add a plotting tool as used for anti collision to determine Closest point of Approach (CPA).We used the radar ring and waypoint symbols for tracking, we came to within 200 miles of WILMA with an estimated force 7~8 winds.

FWIW:

Local time 0830 AEST: Just spoke to a friend on a boat in the Breakwaer Marina in Townsville on our morning ham net. The marina survived quite well, as did our friends. Only visible damage was the predictable few biminis, dodgers and furled genoas that idiots left up. Highest reported winds there were in the order of 95 knots in gusts. Not nice, but nothing like what was forecast. Thank goodness!

Cheers,

Jim
