Re: Single Handed 84 Year Old Rescued off Easter Island

[QUOTE=boatman61;853931]So... what your saying is anyone who goes sailing is stupid...
QUOTE]

What I'm saying is that heading out ill prepared is indeed stupid. Whether or not your boat and crew are not ready for heavy weather as in the British 7; or your boat and crew are not ready for heavy weather, as in the 84 year old. Can you unequivocally state that after numerous failures, the old guy "didn't know" what to expect, or that on leaving his home dock unaware his "age" might be a factor or that sailing in well documented and dangerous waters he might not have the physical strength to manage the sails? Your argument that the two are different holds no water, as the end result remains the same.

Who pays the bills? Sure no age limits and all that, but don't call for a rescue. OZ spend a fortune to pick that teenager off the open 40 in the Southern Ocean last year.

In the UK... voluntary donations from sailors and the public...
In Chile... I presume the taxpayer.. but then if they're not doing rescues they're either sitting on their ass doing nothing or playing rescuer/rescuee... still costing the same...
Off Rhode Island... Towboat US...???.. you pay..

Bet like hell Slocum asked the insurer where to go or not.

One has to decide if they are into sailing or into insurance business.

Life priceless, but only when being lived.

No cover for solo sailors...
The company of 7 probably needed a new boat for the 2012 season...

And all you whiners, I hope you're sitting in a nice safe wheelchair in a nanny government run nursing home when you turn 84, whining about something else.

I hope I'm still out there living my life as well as this guy is, and and that we're BOTH pissing the whiners off about it.
I'm all for keeping the old folks active - but some are simply a menance to themselves and others. Just like younger folks.........and no automatic link between getting old and getting wise.

The odds are that at 84 you will be sitting in a rocking chair and thinking you are sailing around cape horn, and that damp patch is from the sea.....

Well, you fellows being expert navigators will undoubtedly steer clear of all land masses, just like you'll steer clear of personal attacks even if someone disagrees with your infallible opinions.
