Absolutely you can go the south Africa route but it's along way round to Europe if that's where you want to go. I know three boats that did it this year, left from where I am now Padang, two of them had the most uncomfortable passage of their circumnavigation so far. It comes down to what your goals are.

Thanks for sharing the story WildWill but it seems like a lot of reckless decisions were made by the skipper.

BTW, I received a quote from Cosco to ship a 50ft boat from Jebel Ali (UAE) to the Red Sea (Saudi) for less money than the fuel, crew and airline tickets would cost. Plus having to take time off of work.

Since you ask, for the last few years no I haven't done much, only a couple thousand miles but I have been working full time and working on a restoration of my current boat. Before that I did manage to do a tiny bit of boating but it was only 25,000 sea miles and that was poorly done since I had to do it all with paper charts and a sextant.

Might I suggest again that if one can't hit a passive target then one has little chance of hitting an aggressor that's shooting at you. Standard part of military training but that concept seems to escape you.

Just wonder how many who plan to clean the decks of an attacker at sea have ever fired a gun off a boat a single time, for any reason.

Please do tell what reckless decisions were made? This should be good.

For most people, simply leaving their sofa and going outside is a reckless decision. Or, releasing the docklines once a year to empty their holding tanks.

Some people with a zest for living will actually sail into the sunset heading west for year upon year and experience life unlike most of the people I see here on this forum with 10,000+ posts. To me, that is a reckless waste of a life sitting at a computer typing away about other peoples experience when you have none of your own.

So please, tell us what the skipper did that was so reckless.

Exactly. Sorry but I was basically saying, if there boarded it's pretty much game over. All the talk about cannons was tongue in cheek. Seriously, discretion is the often the better part of valour. . Especially when your outnumbered. IMHO
