Re: Packing for 4month cruise

Hi from Anchorage, Sara.

1st off: don't let the stigma of cruise ships sour you. My wife & I did a cruise a few years ago and had a blast. I didn't tell any of my sailing pals because we all know what 'cruise people' are like. Blue hair, white clothes, whining, wheezing, eating, etc. we spontaneously created all of our shore excursions (mule, water taxi, rental car, skiff, mopeds, etc). One of the favorite times of my life. I was also surprised to find some fun/interesting people in the other cruisers, despite my own bigotry. I avoided any discussion of Sarah Palin, just as I avoid that now.

2nd: the voyage you are taking thru southeast Alaska is incredible. I haven't done it on a cruise ship but I've worked there many years commercial diving & building stuff. It is an amazing place and you won't be sorry (unless the weather is *really* bad). It's also not very comon for cruise ships to come up as far as Anchorage. If you get chance, PM me and my spousal unit & we will point you in the right direction.

3rd: it's really friggin cold here now (-15 F) and that's why we are going to Martinique next week and sailing to Grenada and back. Dang pleased about that.

You get along with the in-laws, and i'll bet you have a great trip. Hope so!

Re: Packing for 4month cruise

3. Man, rub it in why dontcha??

It's not -15° here but I SO would love to be heading south as you are!

2. We don't actually make port at Anchorage, we land at Seward and then train to Anchorage. I will take advantage of your kind offer and check in by pm for tips and advice ; -)

1. I am retraining my brain as fast as I can to shed my *real boat, real travel, real people* prejudice. I have seen on the other boards, inhabited by the other kind of cruisers, that as in any crowd, there is a mix.

But yeah... I won't be offering in any political opinions on this trip I bet.

; -)

Re: Packing for 4month cruise

I just wonder if the op is getting the same mileage out of this thread that we are? I can almost hear her now on that cruise ship.......

"I got on the wrong cruising forum to ask about packing, came to find out these people cruise in their own little boats!!! Probably no kitchen or bathroom, they must eat raw fish and poop over the side".

The story might have made her popular.

I'm sure her definition of "cruise" is a whole lot deferent then ours. It's a navigation/lingo thing. She'd get lost at sea too.

A Kiwi friend, Gordon Tronson, has the perfect land dinghy for that cruising set. Well, us too I imagine, never too far from a Jimmy Buffet refreshment.
