Great read.

Hello Sven,

I found it by doing a seach in google for Pink Lady, and digging through alot of results. I think that it isn't linked in her site, because Don McIntyre is letting her have her own adventure and keeping a low profile. He is very famous in Australia. His whole philosophy is that children are being coddled too much and losing the spirit of adventure that made his country great. That is why he helps young adventurers achieve their dreams. An admirable man, in my opinion, and an admirable goal.

"TOO MUCH TEEN SPIRIT? Charles Doane Monday, 25 January 2010 14:53

"So now the fat is in the fire. We have two pubescent girls on the loose bound non-stop around the globe via Cape Horn and the Southern Ocean with all the world watching and cheering them on. Abby Sunderland, age 16 (in the photo above), departed Marina del Rey in Los Angeles on Saturday, and as I write is west of Ensenada heading south down the Mexican coast. Meanwhile, her rival, Jessica Watson, also 16, of Queensland, Australia, who already cleared Cape Horn on January 13, suffered multiple knockdowns over the weekend while riding out a 70-knot gale."

* * *

To read the entire article by Charles Doane, and to see an interesting pictorial comparison of the two vessels, go to:

Well that is sure to light the fire of your average adventure-seeking indepedently-minded teen!

I posted that because it has an interesting perspective on the boats.

True sportsmanship

From Jessica's blog today:

P.S. Congratulations times a million to Abby Sunderland for departing on her voyage last Saturday, I know what a challenge it is, just to get to the start line. Despite the fact that there seems to be a lot of adults determined to see Abby and I pitted against each other as rivals, I only wish her the best of luck and am totally thrilled that there's another girl going for the record!

I think that should be 1200 ft crest to crest or roughly 360m. Still no fun to be sailing in.
