Hi just like to hear from other cruisers on their experience with cyclone Oswald currently playing havoc on the Queensland coast, I am moored in Manly harbour & it's quite a gale blowing here.

I'm in cawarral creek near Yeppoon the monsoon trough is now south of here, had wind gusts to 58 knots and 350 mm. of rain in 24 hours . Other places had much more rain than here. I hope to leave here monday.

Here is a composite of the Global Forecast System (GFS) staged in six hour intervals commencing from 4pm this afternoon, onwards until 10pm tomorrow night. (Based on the latest run that came in at 2:30pm AEST). Noted on these outputs are the 925mb winds and the direction, which is a great key indicator of movement and positioning of the low pressure system. To convert the 925mb level into the metrics, the winds illustrated are roughly at 2,498 ft. or 762m above the surface of the earth.

Secondly, the colour on these charts indicates how strong the winds are at that particular level, for example (35kts Light yellow, 40kts Yellow, 45kts Orange, 50kts Red etc). So what can we take away from this? Concentrated winds to 50kts between Bundaberg and Gympie extending west to Taroom at 4pm this afternoon. Overnight and into tomorrow, the winds are forecast to increase slightly to 55kts-60kts especially between Gympie and the QLD/NSW Border extending west to the Darling/Southern Downs by 10am tomorrow and lasting well into the evening.

Again, DESTRUCTIVE wind gusts are a real possibility with this particular system, that has already produced two spout/tornado occurances in as many days. Tomorrow, the helicity (low level turning) increases which shifts that risk further south. Now add more elements of 200mm of Rainfall and abnormally high tides and this does not paint a pretty picture.

Just remember, this is only ONE model scenario out of around four to five that we utilise, and it seems to have been on the money for the most part with this system so far.

The news tonight said that one of the tornadoes hit at Burnett heads. Anyone know how the two marinas down in that area fared? And is the Burnett slated to flood yet again?

Makes me glad that I sailed south to Tassie... for now, anyway!

I hope everyone is fine. We spent two hurricane seasons in Mooloolaba. We just had thunderstorms while we were there.

When those rivers start flooding, things can get wild.

Just recorded 48 knots in Manly harbor, a couple of boats have broken some mooring lines but no damage.

Burnett river is horrendous....town marina in Bundaberg...washed away pontoons + boats! River to top of poles already!

A mate of mine on his yacht on a mooring down near sugar wharf is steering left and right to avoid logs and rubbish....pontoon and boat floated by. I don't like his chances if another pontoon T bones him!

My boat is thankfully up on the hard in the "dry" storage area of Bundaberg Port Marina, i think she managed to dodge the tornadoes, just hope she is high enough to keep her feet dry.......

Family friends lost their house totally, cars sheds the lot on Tablelands road.
A creek became a river and burst which is fairly typical of our coastal floods.

Attached picture at Boyne river the Awoonga Dam upriver is 8 metres over the spillway, our daughter lives at Nagoorin behind the dam it'll be a week before she can get her kiddies out.

Not a great Australia Day Weekend.

The Burnett River is about to flood 2 m higher than the 2011 floods. It is the biggest EVER for the Burnett apparently. But there wasn't much prior warning about how bad it was going to be. The replacement marina docks have washed downstream with boats still tied to them.

Here in the Brisbane River, it is windy with gusts to mid-30s, so all is ok so far, but they are predicting 40 - 45 knots for Moreton Bay. 3 anchors out. We got hit by a half sunken tinny half an hour ago. If it starts to flood again, a la 2011, we will be getting out into the bay before we get hit by anything bigger.

Just heard he's tucked into quarantine anchorage....out of main river flow by Bundaberg Port Marina....and comfortable, thank goodness!

Whole of Bundaberg town marina washed away down past him...boats and pontoons!!
