AICW CLOSED SOUTH OF NORFOLK Due to high water

Saw this news flash today. Thursday September 22, 2016

"SSCN JUST REPORTED THE FOLLOWING:

FLASH: AICW CLOSED SOUTH OF NORFOLK

We just received a report from Skipper Richard Ross that the AICW south of Great Bridge Lock and Atlantic Yacht Basin is closed due to high water. The Dismal Swamp Canal is closed at Deep Creek Lock, also due to high water.

No further details are available at this time."

Re: AICW CLOSED SOUTH OF NORFOLK Due to high water

It's because we had a weeks worth of heavy rain almost none stop with the counterclockwise system sitting right on us and not moving.

I sailed back across the bay on Sunday. It was a beautiful sail and a nice day .....straight shot due to the ESE winds.

I usually cover the mainsail etc the following day but just got to it today due to the weather.

Today I raised the mainsail and opened up the boat to let both dry out.

Everything should be good in a day or so as far as the ICW. We even had a 2 hour delay for work today due to water I'm guessing ............... sort of like a snow/sleet day in winter

Just spoke with the Lock Tender at Great Bridge Lock who confirms that, even though Great Bridge Lock is still operating, there is virtually no place south for boats to go and boats may not tie up in the lock itself.
The holdup problem lies with North Landing Swing Bridge (Mile 20.2 closed vertical clearance of 3ft) south of Great Bridge where at least a foot of water must go down before the electrical circuits can begin to dry out. AND, it is still raining! Almost all docks immediately south of Great Bridge have been taken and the small dock across from Atlantic Yacht Basin is under water.
Water at Deep Creek Lock is and the canal was three to four feet above normal and water is still coming over the lock gate. Obviously the lock is inoperable and it will be sometime before the water level drops.
NO ESTIMATE IS BEING MADE AS TO WHEN OPERATIONS WILL RETURN TO NORMAL AT EITHER LOCK.
A beautiful day in the Keys though....

Centerville and North Landing swing bridges are now operational. Dismal Swamp alt route still closed at Deep Creek Lock.

Watch out for "deadheads" after all this high water.
