Members List - Incorrect Data

Earlier today, Andy R started a thread re 50,000th member and he posted that currently there were 49,435 members (at 07.46) yet when I go to the members list (under the Community menu), it tells me there are 46,210 members.

Where are the missing 3,225 members?
Which is the real figure?
Should I trust Andy's data or the program's data?

I could understand a small difference of say 1 or 2 hundred but 3K+....

Some member names are removed. Some of the less desirable members are no longer with us. The member numbers increase but a spammer shows up, joins, and is removed. They join, they count, they get booted. Most people choose to remain as members and we don't delete members that have posted because the posts need to be attached to a person.

Gord is correct and that would be the basis of the contest. We can't rig the count as we need to remove spammers so we use that number.

Re: Members list - incorrect data.

Good catch, guys!

The difference may represent those spammers who successfully registered, but subsequently got banned & canned (membership deleted).

Andy will have to clarify which will be the “official” figure, for the contest.

OOPS; Paul beat me to it! Thanx Pblais.

Re: Members list - incorrect data.

It appears we have 2,408 spammers and 859 users waiting email confirmation.

I say we work off the number on the forum listing page (link) and not the member list.

FYI - We keep all member account active because we have tools to identify multiple accounts. By keeping their data in the system we have more information to help spot them if they return. Regarding the users awaiting email confirmation, those accounts are pruned once or twice a year for very old accounts which are obviously not going to be confirmed.

Re: Members list - incorrect data.

Lets see if I understand this correctly, CF has had about 49.5K members join, about 3K are booted off 'cause they are spammers or otherwise bad, leaving about 46.5K of good guys.

Yet we are going to celebrate the joining of the 50,000th member even if he is a bad guy (especially as we have already chopped off about 3K of other black hats)!

OK, I can see some logic in this arrangement but I would see more reason to celebrate 50,000 genuine members.

Anyhow, it is only a numbers racket so I had better stick in my time/date stamp soon!

Re: Members list - incorrect data.

I see your point and it's valid. Had we discussed this before I posted the contest and before members had submitted their entries based on the contest rules which state the 49,435 members then I'd side with you on this and make it for the 50,000th genuine member. Unfortunately the ball was already rolling and people had already submitted their guesses so we'll go with things as originally posted.

I am really hoping #50,000 is not a spammer!

Re: Members list - incorrect data.

Ah, thank you Boatman for that moment of relief. There is really nothing quite as good as British humor; and it doesn't get any better than this. As a now distant Brit. (Cowley, somewhat forcibly removed at the age of three), I find comparison in only a few veins of American entertainment, notably the long gone television shows "Soap" and "Laugh In." One can argue that other cultures are funnier, but I would aruge that none stand up as intellectually lancing as MP. And if not MP, then the other MPs, as on MPTV. Makes US Congress seem like a Quaker meeting. Cheers to you.

Rule Britanniyuks.

Re: Members list - incorrect data.

if you do a search on the "members" list, you will see that most are people that post from 0-10 times to get answers then never come back.i did a search in order by the join date and 21 out of 30 have not been on here since 2003.

if you average it,there are probably only about 10k to 15k Active members,if that many.
