Pearson Flyer sunk at Romer Shoal

I heard the SV Eagle a 30 ft Pearson Flyer owned by Mike Kijowski of Raritan Yacht Club was returning from the round LI race ripped its keel off at 1am at Romer Shoal off Sandy Hook. Anyone have any other news on this?

I went over that shoal pretty recently. There are definitely a couple spots on that shoal that look suspect for a boat with his draft.

and the riprap on that Romer shoal light did not really seem as charted. It seems to extend out a little bit. that’s why I avoided it by a pretty wide margin on the track you see.

Re: Pearson Flyer sunk at Romer Shoal

I and others who transit the lower NY bay often stay in the shallows (15-20) ft out of the shipping lanes at night and in fog but usually a little further up the bay. Always stayed away from Romer shoals, even before Sandy rearranged its riprap.
Thinking a odd location (if out of Raritan YC), Sunday early a.m., for boat returning from Around LI race.
Anyone have any more insight/info?

I had the same thought. It isn't like they retired from the race and were returning to NY harbor -- they finished 3d in their class. So presumably they came back via the East River.

News report says that the boat was towed & hauled, expected to be repaired. Their homeport is in NJ.
