Canadian buying a sailboat in Texas registering as a Canadian vessel needs state tax

Hi everyone out here. New to the forum and site and new to being the possible owner of a Pearson 424. This is an American vessel and I will be meeting with an agent to make the necessary transfers. I want to leave it here in Kemah Tx. and sail it here locally till I’m ready to extend to other countries. Possibly not more than a year before I set out. My main question is whether I’m obligated to pay the 6.5 % Texas sale tax if it’s registered on transfer as a Canadian vessel. I understand I need a cruising permit from US Customs.

Your best bet is to visit the TPWD website and/or call them and ask. If it will be kept in Texas for more than a few months then you will 1) need to register it in TX and 2) pay the tax
