Sharks in Barnegat Bay ?

This photo was taken off the dock of my friends house in Tuckerton, about 10 miles from the ocean inside of the Barnegat Bay. He lives on a creek and this is the first time we saw them, about 4 sharks appearing to be nurse sharks, from 2 to 4 foot. I have seen sharks come into the inlet but primarily stay there during tidal flows, but this is pretty far from any inlet. The shadows cast are somewhat decieving, ill try to post a better one later

Re: Sharks in Barnegat Bay ?

I saw a show on TV discussing a shark attack in a New Jersey river. The experts believed the most likely species to get up river that far would be a Bull Shark because they have no problem swimming up rivers into fresher water. I'm just riffing here, because now that I am googling this a bit, I see that the Bull shark doesn't go further north than the Carolinas. Interesting to read about though. It was pretty hot out, so who knows.

From the article:
"In the Atlantic it is found from Massachusetts to southern Brazil, and from Morocco to Angola."

I know that sharks tend to come into the inlet with the tides, but living in canals 10 miles from the inlet?? I know it has happened elsewhere in the US with bull sharks but we were really suprised to see them residing in the creeks.

Matawan Maneater? No, I met her in a longshoreman bar in Newark.

;-)

Ok, actually that sounds right.

Re: Sharks in Barnegat Bay ?

Apparently these were there for a few months, my friend was coming in around the beginning of summer and thought he saw one but with the glare against him he thought he was seeing things. Guess he was right.

Re: Sharks in Barnegat Bay ?

Bull sharks have been responsible for several attacks well inland in Australia. They are caught fishing from docks on the Clarence River 15 miles from the heads. Make good fish and chips, too.

Cheers,

Jim
