perko seacocks

nice seacocks. poor documentation.
no exploded diagram, no individual part #s.
as best i can glean from vague repair part kit references, the stem is sealed to body with o rings.

after 15 yrs, they drip out stem just a tiny bit.
dont need an $80 (times 12 seacocks) ball and seat complete repair kit just a couple 50cent o rings apparently. .

anyone have any idea what number o ring for
a 1.5" perko seacock?

thx

Re: perko seacocks

I’d disassemble it, and take a used O-Ring to my industrial supply house.

I doubt Perko will be much help, but:

Re: perko seacocks

yep. thats the obvious thing. just gotta convince
my wife to hang upside down in the bilge and hold her
thumb over the hole for 2 hrs while i run to napa and match o rings.

u r righr, perko was no help. they just said buy our entire
$80 rebuild kit to get a couple orings.

i have heavy equipment loaded with orings. cant afford
to have it out of service over a cheap replaceable part that is designed to wear out occasionally. luckily those
manufacturers realize the need and supply o ring packs
to keep as spares rather than telling you to buy a new piston head to get one.

hopefully somebody on the forum has already done this and is willing to just disclose the top secret ring size.

Re: perko seacocks

A hydraulic repair shop is a good source for orings and seals. They usually have lots of sizes plus rolls of uncut oring material and can make custom sizes.

Re: perko seacocks

You should be able to remove the stem without a lot of water coming in. The only time water should be able to get to the stem is when the valve is partially open.

If you think about how a ball valve works, water shouldn’t continuously get to the stem unless the ball seats are damaged.

If I’m wrong and water shoots out when you remove the stem, just cuss me out and replace the stem.

Re: perko seacocks

after a lot of sea miles i started carrying oring stock, cutters, and glue in the spares for watermaker and engine orings. just need to know the size and can start stocking it for seacocks as well. takes little room and saves a lot of futile time looking in places like columbia or venezuala.

and it depends on how the stem and ball joint is constructed. some stems key into a hole in the ball.
pull them and you got a gusher. others have a blind mortise in the ball in which case you are dead on, shouldnt leak unless the teflon seals are bad.

since mine are leaking, and the seals seem good, i fear the former.

sure would be easy if perko would share an exploded diagram or parts list instead of just replying to my
emails with "see the catalog to buy a full rebuild kit". (price $80).

Re: perko seacocks

I fear Perko is but a shell of its former self.
At one time they had a catalog the size of a small phonebook that was full of high-quality hardware.
Today? mostly "chromed" plastic and Zamac, (pot metal,) with a few "Legacy" items, with outrageous prices.
As to your O-ring(s), perhaps Apollo Valve can help.
Can you post a close-up pic of the offending valve?
It might help some forumites to cogitate a way of stopping the water flow.
Jump in water, stick cork/rubber plug in thru hull?
Just thinking out loud,,.
Edit: Searching my memory, (what's left,) does that seacock have the "triangle" shaped base, (like one of the Groco models)?
Wouldn't it be a coincidence if the Perko seacock was actually manufactured by another company, or perhaps used the same internal balls/seals/O-rings?

Re: perko seacocks

Buy one rebuild kit from Perko. Get the oring from it. Go to shop to get more o rings. Return rebuild kit for refund.

Both Groco and Apollo valves use what you describe as a blind mortise connection between the stem and the ball. I can’t imagine any reason for the stem to penetrate the ball all the way to the water passage. Here is an exploded drawing of the Groco seacock.

Re: perko seacocks

Estimate the size, get a few, do one and stretch to fit one oring for temporary use. Then buy all you need with the example you take to the store.
As mentioned, if you know the size of the rubber cross section, you can cut and glue orings with CE glue (5 sec glue)
I've done this in use up to 3, 4 ....5000 psi!

I had no idea Perko was still around...

Re: perko seacocks

Final Answer:
It is a hard polyurethane o-ring. Not rubber.
White semi-clear matierial, turns white/tan over time.
Cost me $9 for six of them once they were identified.

Perko price is $138 for a kit which contains 1.
Perko support never called back after talking to their personnel 3 times requesting
the specs. Just said buy a whole kit. Very dissappointed in what used to be an excellent company.

Hope this helps someone else.

Re: perko seacocks

I have 5 Perko door latches. Over the years every one of them has broken, some several times. The bevel and cam (what engages the door frame) are flimsy pot petal. The last time they needed repair, I decided to fix all five of them. Tried to order 10 repair kits from Perko. "We don’t sell retail." West Marine finally had them for $30 each. They next time they break, I’ll buy a barrel bolt at the hardware store.

As a slight aside, here is a device for working on thru hulls while in the water. There are other variations and manufacturers.
