Getting a good used engine in Australia?

Hi all,

I need to find an affordable way to replace my 2GM20C engine. I own a Duncanson 30 and the 2GM is connected to a Yanmar SD20 saildrive.

The 2GM has had significant issues and the repair costs are $7,000+. I’ve costed up some new engines and the minimum cost seems to be $11,000 for a new engine with predominantly self installation. Unfortunately this is too much for me.

I would like to find a cheaper inboard (not outboard) engine option. I also don’t want to buy someone else’s problem as it seems most of the second hand engines on the market are for sale because they have issues.

Does anyone know of a good second hand engine or a point of contact I can use to get one?? I’d like to be able to plug into my SD20 saildrive.

Please help! (Feel free to PM me with specific engine offers)

A quick scan of Gumtree turned up a few.

Keep an eye on gumtree. I picked up a brand new (10 years in storage) Yanmar 2GM20F for $4000 last year. It was from an abandoned boat building project. The motor was not for sale separately but I said give me a call any time you want to sell it. Sure enough I got the call.
Cheers

Thanks for the replies. I am in South Australia but happy to pay for freight from interstate.

I’ve looked at every engine on Gumtree but all are either high hours or very old, or have issues.

It’s a pity you are not shaft drive as there is a brand new Lombardini 20hp for $5500 ono on Gumtree. What about the Yanmar in Perth for $3500 it looks like new?
Cheers

Th Lombardini looks amazing, that's a real shame it won't connect to SD20. I have looked into the one in Perth but unfortunately there's little know about the serviceability of the engine - only the outside has been cleaned up after being in a boat for a long time. It was traded with a repower I believe.

Contact John Witchard, Witchard Marine, Mona Vale. I believe He has some old engines left over from replacement projects and could be able to help, including fabricating adaptor plates as required

Nutha thumbs up for Minards in Newcastle - talk to "diesel Neil" for all things Yanmar.

A mate here in Adelaide had his 2GM20 worked over recently by Webbe Marine I think it was. Head decoked, valves lapped, bores honed and new rings - I think it set him back about $3.5K. He also had the injectors serviced for another $150 from memory. His motor was set high enough that the oil pan could be dropped and pistons removed without pulling it out of the boat, which otherwise would have added significantly to the cost.

Re: Getting a good used engine in Australia?

I am in South Australia and have a Yanmar 3GM30 (24HP) near new engine which I bought to replace my own motor. It runs perfectly and is currently in my 16ft old style GOLLEY boat. GOLLEY built the original "Popeyes" on the Torrens. Excellent fishing boat but WAY overpowered. Happy to discuss options. PM me for contact details. Located Wallaroo.

Re: Getting a good used engine in Australia?

Dicon Engineering at Colmslie in Brisbane marinise used Kabota engines at a reasonable price. The marinised a 32hp Kobota for our previous 35ft vessel and it performed perfectly. They made up adaptor plates, etc. Worth checking out.
