Pearson 27 sailboat

I'm looking at Pearson 27 sailboats built around 1988. They seem to be very solid sailboats and reasonably priced can someone give me advice or an opinion about these boats the boats I've been looking at are freshwater boats. My intention is to use the boat along the Eastern seaboard Chesapeake Bay Etc

The Pearson's seem like solid boats to me. There are a ton of different models out there. Production boats but done fairly well. It may depend on the model but I have not heard bad things about the 27.

I had one of these and really liked it. Wheel steering but transom hung rudder. Lots of opening ports, huge head, decent aft 'cabin', good access to universal 12hp that powered her well, table/v-berth in bow (you had to remake bed everyday but huge v-berth comparable to 32+ foot boats), 6' headroom. Seemed to be strong hull and deck, good/safe compaionway and cockpit setup. Small anchor locker.

I chartered one once on the Chesapeake Bay. Thought it was a nice little boat. It sailed well, but was the most tender boat I've ever helmed. It would lay over pretty far in gusts, but was still totally under control. No problem for me, but some people freak out when a boat heels dramatically.

I would buy one again. But mine had shoal wing keel and if there is an option I would have rather had a deeper keel. They do heel as said but that doesn't bother me either. Have a good reefing system and it should be fine. Mine made the trip after I sold her from Honolulu to Kona on big island so that wasn't too shabby.

I have been hunting for a sailboat for the Chesapeake Bay I looked at a 1987 Pearson 27 so-so shape I'm also looking at an O'Day 272 does anyone have an opinion on those boats the Pearson will need an investment of several thousand dollars to bring it up to snuff and I think the oday will cost me about $2,500 to get it up to Snuff both boats are about the same price plus or minus $500

I owned an 1983 O'Day25 for 8 yrs followed by a 1986 Pearson 33 for 8 years. In my opinion the Pearson is a better made boat and will serve you for many years if you make the necessary investment of time and money.

Have you been able to find any owners associations for these boats? Often you will learn tons of stuff from owners associations and their websites. Good luck.

My first boat was a 1982 US Yachts 27. In mid 80s they sold the molds to Pearson which built them for a few years under reincarnated name Pearson Triton 27. If that's what you have it is a well designed sturdy and forgiving boat. I had a shoal draft version drawing 3.5' but it sailed well and could turn on a dime. My only issue (and which eventually turned me to look for another boat) was its old, too expensive to fix and too expensive to replace Volvo MD5B. If yours has a Yanmar or a Universal you should be good for the foreseeable future.
