Re: ICC requirement

Individual national certificates are generally acceptable, especially if you provide translations of key phrases (limitations on boat type, size, tonnage, engine power etc). Croatia has a list of...

Re: Safe and reliable winter lay-up on Sardinia or Corsica?

About 8 years ago I explored both Sardinia and Corsica over a 6 month period, and spent two winters in Sardinia. I wrote up the season's results on JimBsail.info: Cruising guide for Corsica...

Re: Galatas opposite Poros

Located just east of Galatas, called Poros Marine. Small yard with crane and trolley. No direct contact, but if you ask at the beach restaurant - +30 2298 042550 - they'll probably help. For other...

Re: Sardinia and Corsica: Sailing Itinerary

Did you pick up the recommendation to consider an anti-clockwise circuit? When the mistral is blowing, gives you relatively light east coast sea breezes going north, and a rollicking run down the SW...

Re: Breaking Docking Lines

Not theory vs experience. They inform each other. Experience shows the need. Solutions evolve over time - Darwinian stuff. Physics and dynamics give insghts for disruptive ideas, to be tested.

Re: Breaking Docking Lines

Just like snubbers, but about x 2 the travel, x 2 the price, much noisier, and must be used with a safety chain link for the day it breaks when you're not there.

Another triumph of marketing hype...

Re: Breaking Docking Lines

Energy = mv(squared). Arresting a boat from a given speed will always transfer the same energy. It goes to dock motion, wave reaction, or heat in the rope.

Energy = force x distance. If stopping...

Re: Breaking Docking Lines

+1

Rubber snubbers are a triumph of marketing hype over logic.

A spiralled line, wrapped around a rubber shaft, when straightened will increase it's reach by about 15% of the snubber's length -...

Re: Best marina netween rhodos and santorini

Laziness - 'cos the only phone number I had for the office never replied. Dimitris did reply, his English was good, and I usually hired a car when visiting!

Re: A fun, lively place to winter in the Med?

I updated Syracuse and Elba pages up to date after correspondence with a couple of boats which routinely winter afloat, shifting anchorages (or even using marinas!) if the weather suggests it's time...

Re: A fun, lively place to winter in the Med?

If you liked Palma city, but were fed up with trekking around the marina, you should consider Cagliari, in particular, Marina Portus Kalaris, very convenient for the town centre. Two marinas further...

Re: need help for sailing to Greece

A 2 year visa would normally give a person right of residence in the EU. Check the wording of the visa. People with right of residence in the EU (even if it's only for 2 years) may only use boats...

Re: What does exiting the EU mean for yachts under temporary importation rules

Forced Delay. In the event you can not leave within 18 months, you may ask for an extension of a further six months in order to effect repairs - or deal with illness or domestic circumstances.

Re: What does exiting the EU mean for yachts under temporary importation rules

Yes, you're correct, and it's very important. Plenty of US visitors to Europe were fined for overstaying visa stamps during the early days Schengen when they popped home by air leaving the boat...

Re: Volos -- unofficial dock manager -

I'd wait to assess results . . . to see how the relationship developed.

I don't pay the Pylos guy anything. He's just a con artist. The Spatahori guy says "it's my job". But he does insist you do...
