Re: Island Packet 35 or 38 owners honest opinions.

I had an IP40 for about five years. It was a fantastic boat for the Caribbean. Stood up and sailed very well in the trade winds, was well ventilated for the tropics, roomy and comfortable, and had...

Re: In Mast Roller Furling

We had in mast furling on our IP40, Eventyr. I loved it. It was never a problem and simplified sail handing for our small crew. As mentioned, it's great to have the sail totally put away before...

Re: Caliber vs Island Packet

I owned an IP 40 for five years. I took her 12,000 miles around the Caribbean and had a fantastic trip. I never had an issue with windward performance and I always enjoyed her accommodations at...

Re: Tank Sizes

My Island Packet 40, Eventyr, had:
170 gallon water tank;
90 gallon diesel tank;
30 gallon holding tank;
300 gallon per day watermaker (Spectra).

I prefer big tankage. I despise having a...

Vote for Commandeur

I used Commandeur for two plus years and recommend them. If the Euro has dropped vs. the dollar, then they'll be even more competitive in their pricing. I think the liability exclusion (for guests)...

Bashing

I'll sail every chance I get, but when the passage is dead to windward, endless tacking would have cost me my companion, a price I wouldn't even consider.

By motorsailing, we made better speed,...

Fl-South America

Just motor. Everyone else does. Get Bruce Van Sant's "Gentleman's Guide to Passages South." His best advice is that you're going to motor at the most opportune times (lightest winds) and that the...

The parallel chargers will work fine. If you have a big bank (over 500 amp-hours) that is at, say, 60% of full charge, a 40 amp charger won't take it up to bulk charging voltage. Paralleling a...

Sounds like an easy crossing. This time of year, there is nearly always the chance for T-storms and squalls. Keep your eyes open, reef early, and do some trolling on the way.

An Alternative

Here's another idea that you might try.

On my IP40, I had a factory 40 amp charger that I could power from my little genset. Rather than toss it (and my nice sine wave inverter) to get a bigger...

Colcafe

There is instant coffee that you can find in the South and Western Caribbean called Colcafe. Get the regular with the red lid. It's a very fine powder and dissolves immediately. I don't call...

Pilot houses and hard dodgers

I have not sailed in cold climates, but can say that I would like to have a pilot house or hard dodger on my next boat. A good compromise might be something like the hard dodger that Hallberg Rassey...

Used Value--That's a big range!

Thanks for the replies. Any suggestions on where to search/look for ads, etc? 1500-2500 is a big range! It sounds like $2000 is a fair price since I'm giving away the puller and zincs with it.

A Short Reply

The real answer to this, as you know, is very long and begins with, "It depends."

The short answer is that boats can be very expensive to maintain to a high standard. What does this mean? Well,...

Osage Orange

Osage orange works very well. Just leave one on a plate inside the boat. They are supposed to work better when they have been taken from the tree after the first frost of the fall.

How many watts?

Paul,

3500 watts? Are you sure about that figure? My 16,000 btu unit draws 10 amps at 115 volts. That's only 1150 watts. Am I missing something?

Regards,
Dan

Head Gasket, etc.

The head gasket didn't show any clear sign of failure. In fact, it looked ok to me.

I shut the engine down myself. It didn't go above 230 or 240 on the gauge and the alarm didn't activate...
