Re: USCG rescue 40 foot sailboat Watoosh

This photograph breaks my heart. It's been a long, long time since I read R.L. Graham's book, but he adopted two kittens somewhere and put them aboard. One is standing on his outboard in the photo....

Re: 'lil help with FCC - ship's station license, existing EPIRB

Call the FCC at 1-877-480-3201. They are open 9-5 eastern time. You will get to speak with a very helpful human at this number.

It's a good idea to have your MMSI number and station license...

Re: Anchoring in Washington D.C.

Yeah, I don't think it's technically allowed to anchor up the Channel anymore. The mooring balls are really the best deal. If you choose to anchor outside of Washington Channel, be mindful of the...

Mike, what is the overall length of the sail's luff?

Re: What Model Sailboat is this?

Looks like a Pearson to me. Which model I'm not sure. Why not just ask the current owner?

Re: Chesapeake Bay

Both if there's time. If not I would definitely criss cross southward.

EDITED to Add: The Shellenberger book, recommended up thread, provides lots of itinerary suggestions for a mini cruise...

Re: Chesapeake Bay

Figure $2/ft per night, more in fancy pants places like Annapolis and St. Michaels (the former has an inexpensive, public mooring field and you can anchor in front of the St. Mike's harbor entrance,...

Re: Nightmare Buying - Broker Threats

First, my condolences on your predicament. It blows, I know.

But there is a way to do this. If the lender is game, you can go to a competent marine insurance agent and get the hull insured...

Re: Binoculars?

Another vote for 7x50 Steiners. They can be had for under $500, they're shock and waterproof and you won't believe the quality of the optics.

Re: Advices on electronics

Ten bucks says the pro you hire to get the boat home will have his own nav kit. Ask.

The only requirement from you is a depth sounder.

Re: Boat Yards Hostile to Do-It-Yourselfers

Maybe I'm just a glass half full kind of guy, but $200 is a lot cheaper than back surgery.

FWIW, even used fork lifts can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Re: where to leave a boat in the Bahamas for couple weeks

There's a well sheltered marina in San Juan harbor called Club Nautico. It's about a 20 minute cab ride from there to San Juan airport. I've no experience with it but it's work a look (and probably...

Re: Newbs in Virginia

A great way to learn to sail in the area is the Sailing Club of Washington. https://scow.org/

If you went that route for your first season (and you should), you could probably live aboard at...

Re: Which Pacific Seacraft

A PSC34 in your budget is likely going to need so much work it will ultimately be well beyond your budget. I would focus on a Dana or a larger good old boat that can be brought up to snuff within...

Re: Our cruising costs - month two for a middle-aged couple on a modest boat

This is long staple cotton, rather than the more common short staple variety. The seeds for it were developed in the South Carolina Sea Islands and sold to the Egyptians in the 19th century.

Re: Looking for advice.

I think I'd pick the Sabre over the Vega, all else being equal. It'll be a better sailing boat and more comfortable on the hook. Both of these boats were built in relatively high latitudes and have...

Re: Collision on the Severn

30 seconds before the collision (https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/tags/collision.html) the power boat would have been 1/4 mile away.

That's about right, but 30 seconds is plenty of time to...

Re: Predict Wind: Which model

I use a free app called Windy and have had pretty good luck with it. It's not always accurate, but then again no one is always accurate about the Chesapeake.

Re: Can truck pull a 21-22 footer boat?

I'm just going to caution the tow capacity will be impacted by whether or not the truck has a factory tow package (dedicated radiator for tranny, etc.). And I'd want to see the actual manual on the...

I would look at a Seaward 26. You've a generous budget and shouldn't have a hard time finding something nice.

Re: Dogs don't work anymore

I would temporarily build up whatever surface they're trying to grab before I replaced anything. Maybe with a few layers of duct tape? If it worked I'd do something more permanent.

Canadian Sailcraft is a quality builder. No issues there.

I agree with Steadman the cost estimates presented are low. Double them.

I would plan on a long weekend vacation in USVI. If...
