MapTech: ChartRite or Waterproof Chartbooks?

I’m looking for opinions on which of the two to buy. Costs for both for the Chesapeak are about the same, so that’s not a consideration.

I’ll be in a small open boat, so the waterproof Chartbook...

Re: Hand-operated water maker

Don’t we all?

Ah, yes, so much of marketing is targeted at creating & exploiting fear.

I understand RO pretty well. I was disappointed that the manual for this unit is not yet available, as I...

Re: Where to meet single ladies also interested in the cruising lifestyle?

While I don’t entirely disagree with your premise, the fact is that sometimes you get what you expect to get. Expect all the women you meet to be high maintainence? They probably will be.

I do...

Re: Where to meet single ladies also interested in the cruising lifestyle?

Well. As an American woman, I think that’s a bit of an overgeneralization. I’m a lot more inclined to simplicity and adventure than my husband will ever be.

Indeed!

Re: Reef-safe sunscreen?

Ah, necro threads.

The sunblock issue was a concern for me when I spent time in Hawaii three years ago. I found this brand and really like it.

It does have nano particles,...

Re: Hand-operated water maker

Thank you for the information about the Katadyns. I have no idea why they didn’t show up for me when I was googling manual desalinators.

Re: Hand-operated water maker

Nope, just looking to increase self-sufficiency. I would definitely be the type to build an off-the-grid tiny house, if I didn’t have a large husband who loves modern conveniences.

Re: Hand-operated water maker

I’m an old backpacker; I love survival gear.

Yes, I had already figured out that it would take about an hour to produce a day’s water ration. I expect to bring water with me, and despite what I...

Re: Hand-operated water maker

Well, some places I can land & refill, but many of the places accessible to me from the lower Eastern Shore are marshy & unpopulated. Besides, I can be a little anti-social and until I gain a lot of...

Hand-operated water maker

Most of my cruising will be done on the Chesapeake, so I’ll likely be able to land to refill my water supplies, but I really groove on self-sufficiency. I thought that with no electric system, motor,...

Re: PFD designed for a busty woman?

You make a good point. I’ll be keeping my old PFD anyway (foisting it onto guests, if I ever have any), so I’ll probably continue to use it for kayaking though I don’t love it.

Re: PFD designed for a busty woman?

Great idea, thanks. I made sure to practice reentering my kayak and one day had reason to be grateful for it. I’ve already started looking for a good quiet place to practice launching the boat and...

Re: Small boat, modest dreams

I am so very impressed by anyone who builds their own boat!

I’m a quilter, so I’m no stranger to large projects lasting hundreds of hour, but the level of complexity is so much higher for making a...

Wow, so many posts! Rather than respond to each individually, I’ll just try to address the gist of where the thread is going.

First, I originally didn’t want to be too specific about size, since...

Re: PFD designed for a busty woman?

Yes, you’re right about wanting the bulk of flotation under the breast rather than on them. Years ago, I saw a PFD especially designed for women, made with princess seams, which allow for a much...

Re: PFD designed for a busty woman?

I hadn’t considered an inflatable because I thought they were mostly used for offshore passages, but yes, it’s an idea that has merit.

PFD designed for a busty woman?

Title kinda says it all. My kayaking PFD has never fit well, so I’d rather get a new one as I begin outfitting my NorseBoat-to-be.

Re: Small boat, modest dreams

Such wonderful replies; thank you all! I have a year to research, prepare & outfit before my new boat arrives. Right now I feel like I can scarcely wait - almost bouncing with excitement - but I know...

Small boat, modest dreams

Greetings from a long-time lurker!

Next spring, I should be receiving my new NorseBoat 17.5. I know that’s tender size for many of you, but she’s gonna be a sweet camper/cruiser for me.

I live...
