Re: Cheap fabric for awning

Have you tried to find pvc coated polyester.
As used for lorry sides.
Very waterproof and normally cheaper than sunbrella.
Ideally seams are welded but it sews fine as well. Seems can also be...

Re: Synthetic rigging vs. Stainless steel

This is a major part of why I didn't go DIY synthetic.
I guess once you have it figured out it's easier the next time. That's assuming in some foreign port you can find a suitable grade for standing...

Re: Guyana! Worth the effort?

We really enjoyed french Guyana, Suriname and Guiana.
They are very different from the Caribbean.
Sailing up a river with dense jungle either side, no beaches.
We spent a lot of time exploring...

Re: Synthetic rigging vs. Stainless steel

We are going through a similar decision process.
We are going to go with swagless fittings and stainless.
Both options are DIY.

Our reasons are:
Chaff from Genoa sheets on cap shrouds and baby...

I'm interested to hear what marlec say about adding a protection device. I wonder if the fact that it's effectively 3 phase rather than an alternators DC output means a sterling device won't...

Re: Amsteel for lazy jacks?

I'm still not quite sure why so many people seem to like low stretch lazy jack lines.
I like the stretch. If I crank down on the vang or mainsheet to trim the main I don't want to have to go to the...

Re: Oxalis acid on teak

I'd assumed it was going to stay bare teak and just throwing a bucket of the water surrounding the boat over it at the end. (Fresh water no problem)

If you want to varnish or apply other wood...

Re: QuenchSea Desalinator

They now have pictures of fully assembled units and asked for a shipping address confirmation.
Maybe it'll arrive in September....
I might even be back to pick it up by then.

Re: Oxalis acid on teak

Probably better to neutralise it first with some bicarbonate of soda mixed with water.
It'll fiz when you apply it.
Then you can rinse off with seawater.
(assuming oxalic acid)

Re: Chafe repair

Since you asked for DIY solutions.
I have kept Genoa sheets going where I have damaged the outer by whipping very thin cord (less than 1mm) around them. (Maybe called serving lines)
It worked ok...

Re: Dimmable Tablet

We have a galaxy tab A 10.5 (3 years old ish now)
There are 2 modes we use at night.
Dark mode: turns the white menus black.
Darker: reduces the brightness much further than the normal minimum....

Re: Changing furler forestay without pulling mast

Definitely possible.
You can use your main halyard to go up the mast and just swing round at the top to access the forestay.
Genoa halyard run to the bow and winched tight.
We also used our inner...

Re: Cleaning exhaust port

I look forward to the replies. Ours exhaust manifold at elbow connection (Volvo Penta 2003) also needs cleaning. We are planning careful Dremel action with a vacuum cleaner going at the same time....

Re: Electronics: Starting from scratch

Good lists above.
I don't know about the us Atlantic coast but once in the Caribbean.
1) depth sounder (maybe a fish finder if it can give you increased bottom info, coral, sand, mud etc).
2) VHF...

Re: Attache Solent Stay to Mast Crane

As others have said I don't think you will have enough clearance between the stays.
Work out the angles then make a drawing.
If it doesn't fit then you don't have to worry if it's sting enough.
I...

Re: Wooden Oars, Varnish or Oil?

I gave up on trying to keep varnish on. Maybe I'm not dedicated enough.
I'm currently oiling but not sure its enough protection. It is very easy to apply.

Wrapping the shaft at the oarlocks is...

Re: MANTUS MARINE GIVEAWAY - ends Feb 7, 2022

I'd love to have either the M1 or M2 anchor. They both disassemble easily so can be stored. It would be fantastic to have a backup that we know we could trust while we are cruising long term....

Re: Gelcoat confusion

Yes you do end up with a hard raised line that will collect dirt etc.
If you can possibly maintain the original gelcoat line then do so.
If you progressively wet sand with very fine wet and dry...

Re: Steering System Ideas / Redesign

There are pull pull cable systems that run in conduit, rather than using pulleys and idlers. Lewmar and Edison both supply the conduit. It allows complex long runs.
I'm not sure if it can be used...
