Post Australian sailor and his dog survive two months in the Pacific Ocean

Re: How to know if there is enough room for you in the anchorage?

Thanks for all the replies, it sounds like if there is room for me to swing with my scope and for them to swing with theirs it s not against the etiquette to anchor there?

I just want to know...

How to know if there is enough room for you in the anchorage?

So we've only anchored a few times, and all of them we were either first or the only ones at the anchorage. We are going again soon. And I am trying to google and figure out how to tell if we get...

Re: What is your primary means of navigation (poll)

Both of the screenshots below are in feet. Navionics maps dont even acknowledge the presence of these. I pointed with arrows to 2 of them, but up top there are some rocks that are sourced by Active...

Re: What is your primary means of navigation (poll)

Yeah I have OpenCPN on an Android phone, and that is an option, but there seems to be no benefit over SeaIQ, which I can use on my primary phone (iPhone). Same Vector NOAA charts (pulled straight...

Re: What is your primary means of navigation (poll)

So I downloaded iNavX, seems good (but I still prefer Vector charts due to extra detail and quilting). And I know a lot of people use Navionics maps in iNavX, but I couldnt find them in the store....

Re: What is your primary means of navigation (poll)

So it seems that the best course is to use the charts straight from the horse's mouth. For NOAA we can download and use their charts directly. Is this the case with CHS and SEMAR? Or do we have to...

Re: What is your primary means of navigation (poll)

haha,

Yeah, I have no idea how charts are actually produced. But I imagine when Cabo came about they would simply add it to existing charts and reprint them, leaving everything else as it was. So...

Re: What is your primary means of navigation (poll)

To me as a newcomer to the world of sailing, how do you do that? How do you know what is the best chart for a certain area?

Let me give you a concrete example. I am in Southern California. I...

Re: What is your primary means of navigation (poll)

Absolutely, but as you point out the outdated chart is simply useless. Its plainly obvious that you cant use it. But if you take an area where CM93v2 actually has data. Is it not usable? From...

One thing that I (as a novice) dont fully understand though, and hope you guys can give some perspective.

Re: What is your primary means of navigation (poll)

Yeah, although early on this journey I have already learned that some of the depth soundings can be as old as several hundred years. So yep, definitely cant rely on them alone. :thumb:

But need to...

I considered allowing multiple answers, but I feel like that would muddy the waters a bit. Even with multiple tools everyone got to have a favorite?

And if not, then I think the way ...

Re: Seen various people say to never use a phone/tablet for navigation. Why?

Thank you all for such a great discussion. A few of you brought up that tablets dont get dim enough for night sailing. Well, they do, at least on iOS you can make it so dim you wont even be able to...

Re: What is this symbol on Navionics charts?
