Re: Best 8D non lithium battery

I've not used an 8D size lead acid battery, but I have had very good performance and life from Trojan T-105 6V batteries (in series to make 12V). I believe Trojan make good batteries and they do make...

Re: marriage savers

It would help to state your location so I can get some idea of shipping charges from there to New Zealand. I would also help if you would state the brand and model number of these units.

I'm...

Re: How to be away from home for extended periods

Leaving your yacht unattended anywhere, whether in or out of the water has its unavoidable risks.
In a marina berth: another yacht could hit and damage yours, your mooring lines could chafe through...

Re: Dripless shaftseal?

a photo or 2 of your engine and propshaft and existing stuffing box would be worth a 1,000 words.. I've not seen a dripless seal that would fit in a 2.5" space.

Re: Isomat NB-16 section staysail boom casting removal

There might be hidden screws under those small bails. Can you slide them out of the way to see what's under them?

Re: Source vehicle for a Bosch Style K1 Alternator

Re: Are Solar Mats usable on a yacht?

Re mounting panels on the lifelines: IMHO not a good idea if you plan to go anywhere with waves over a 1m high. A breaking wave has tremendous force and will trash the panels and bend the stanchions....

Re: Corrosion on maststeps, problematic?

From where I sit, its impossible to tell the extent of the underlying corrosion given the photo evidence. If it were me, I'd be scraping off that flacking paint, manually wire brushing the areas, and...

Re: UV for roller furling

Adhesive only application is a waste of your time and money. It will not last long especially on the leech which is subject to fluttering. That cloth is meant for letters and numbers in the middle of...

Re: How To Inspect and Service a Life Raft

With respect, many people including myself have inspected their own life rafts. With the proper equipment, it can be done well.
Of course it will not be a "certified" inspection, but that was never...

Re: Bulkhead finish recommendation

Hello n5ama,
I spend many years making custom furniture using various hardwoods, oak, ash, cheery, European beech, NZ matai, etc. My preferred finish was the following: 1/3 spar varnish, 1/3 boiled...

Re: Lewmar Hatch Friction Stays Frozen

Yes, there is a spring inside the 2 halves of the friction lever. And yes getting the adjustment right is fiddly. Too lose and the hatch won't stay open, too tight and it is difficult to open (and...

Re: What is good switchboard wiring?

Re documenting your electrical system:
It is a very good idea, and I've done it on some of my 5 yachts. Also numbered tags at each end of all the wire runs and a list of all those numbers.
I crewed...
