Re: MOB ‘sling’ or similar

Lifeslings are great for getting the MOB back alongside the boat.
Actually getting the MOB on board is more difficult - particularly if you are the MOB and your wife is trying to recover you by...

Re: Furler to Hanks? Makes sense or no?

Another part of the equation is how many crew you have on board.
Furlers make short-handed sailing much easier.
Hanks are great but more effort while sailing.

Re: Heating a Catamaran

I have no idea whether this is feasible due to power requirements, but could underfloor electric heating work?
A small panel in each hull should be all you need - the rising warm air should also...

Re: Rename or not?

I once was on a boat with a group of Anglican priests.
I asked them what their opinion was re the “heathen” renaming process.
They all agreed that it was all a bit of fun and none of them had an...

Re: I'm new to sailing and having a mid life crisis

Hi, Richie,

FYI you live in the home of the RYA (Royal Yachting Association).
They provide world-class sail training that will guide you on the right path.

Their Competent Crew course will...

Re: batteries running to 0% at night

As Tin Tin said, check your inverter.
They draw a lot of power and are often overlooked.

Re: With lithium do we actually need a dedicated starter battery?

Or you go with the “belts and braces” approach:
Install a separate Lead Acid battery for the starter.
Lithium for your house.
If, for some reason, the starter battery fails to work you can always...

Re: Offer your own boat for charter?

On first glance this sounds like a bad idea.
Oh, and on the second and third as well!

When you say you’re refitting a custom race boat as a cruiser, are you also replacing all of the...

Re: Leave outboard up or down in salt water?

Thanks, Phil, I was trying to think if I’d ever seen a dinghy dock in Aus - maybe up north?
Certainly not common down south.

Re: Leave outboard up or down in salt water?

Maybe it’s an Australian thing, but I’ve never seen or heard of anyone leaving their outboard down in the water when either sailing or stopped.

Re: RYA or other agency and where in Europe??

Hi, Luuk,

It’s hard to give too much advice without knowing more about your sailing experience.
One school, for example, offers a 9-day course but you need to have some sailing under your belt....

Re: IRPCS/COLREGS Source

Although it’s not a direct source, I find the Imray “Rules and Signals” app a great reference as it includes the full Colregs text but also lots of other useful information.

I can carry it in my...

Re: Collision Avoidance

I assume you were motoring / motor sailing? Otherwise you would almost certainly have been the stand-on boat.

Re: Signal for hove to?

Thanks - interesting article.

Without disappearing too far down a rabbit hole, those statements appear to be an opinion (unfortunately not referenced) rather than from some official document.

Hey, Montanan, it looks like you’re quoting some official source here. Can you provide the reference?

Re: Collision Avoidance

Changing course is only one of the response actions available.
You can also change speed (which in a yacht usually means slow down).

And, of course, the requirement to generally turn to starboard...

Re: Hello from Perth

Have a look at “Free Range Sailing” on YouTube.
They spent a lot of time sailing along the WA coast.

Re: International Code of Signals - Single Letter

I’m not sure how you come to this conclusion.
The boat that is dragging would not use five short blasts as they would not be unsure of the intentions of the vessels around them.

I guess the...

Re: Do you cook using salt water while cruising?

C’mon, Jim,

Surely you’ve been in Aus long enough to realise that no-one here drinks Fosters!
