Re: Mantas M1 or Sarca Excel

We love our Excel and it has always set immediately (in viable bottoms) and held our 20 ton ketch without dragging for 5+ years of full time, all season cruising living on anchor, including many...

Re: Wireless Switching

I was fortunate that my boat came with a multi-function Quick remote control system (https://www.quickusastore.com/boat-supply/accessories/hand-held-remote-controls/hand-held-remote-control/)

The...

Re: Beta or Westerbeke for repower?

Love, love, love the Beta.

After 40+ years and 11 keel boats of various types and sizes, bought one with a Beta re-power and loved it enough to re-power our next two boats with Beta, so we're on...

Re: Auxiliary Line on a Bruce anchor

Similar but different than Bill's "Underwater Trip Line" I deploy my "Hidden Trip Line" strategy every time I anchor:

Step 1: For quick and easy deployment, attach sturdy SS carabiners to each end...

Re: I keep tripping my marina's power pedestal when I turn on my main shore pwr break

This is potentially an important clue. If your battery charger if off then comes on it will typically draw a lot of current, then gradually step down as it senses the battery is fully charged....

1985 Nauticat 43 Pilothouse Cutter/Ketch

Just returned from six months cruising Desolation Sound and the waters of British Columbia, "Grace" is the much sought after Sparkman & Stephens designed Nauticat 43 ketch, built to exacting...

Re: Deck vent attachment for compost toilette

I would use this- https://air-onlyventilators.com/air-only-low-profile/ (see top image below)

The challenge, if it matters to you, is you wouldn't be able to install the shutoff without getting...

Re: Anyone installed fuel tank for regular gas?

You can easily add a fuel pump (https://amzn.to/40Go5Qv) to a fuel tank that has a pickup tube or other connection for a fuel line (as any fuel tank should).

Would be cool to securely mount your...

Re: Who is your local Chandlery?

I love new/used chandleries that allow you to consign your unwanted used stuff, purchase used when available, stock new stuff and can order specialized stuff.

Our favorite is Longship Marine...

Re: 5/16" or 3/8" Chain

This is good info and explains why I use 5/16 G4 on my 20 ton (fully loaded) Nauticat 43 as we cruise the PNW and I want 500 feet of chain for deeper anchorages which would be too much weight in 3/8....

Re: Why you might consider still keeping your generator

After 5 years cruising full time in PNW our pattern for our1200ah house bank has been that our solar and wind has been able to keep up 100% with our energy needs (+alternator when under way) April to...

Re: Starlink for video

Both of us work remotely and Starlink has been a blessing, enabling us to cruise much farther and more remotely than when we relied on cell carriers and hotspots.

As full time cruisers in PNW we...

Re: Hard Dodger Window Material

I'm a fan of Boatwindows.com and they make a "heavy duty" version that might be a good choice for your application.

Having replaced the windows in the salon of our Nauticat I learned the...

Re: solo anchoring technique

I disagree that they were not over my anchor. 20 feet is too close for comfort and a boat at anchor can swing over a radius of 50 feet or so with minimal wind and current. This boat was definitely...

Re: Spectra Watermaker problem has me stumped

Thanks much Desmond, I wish I had this info a long time ago! I ended up stopping use of the Spectra watermaker and have been filling up at marinas (200 gallon capacity keeps us going for 4-6 weeks...

Re: solo anchoring technique

A well designed new-gen anchor proven to work well in the bottoms that you anchor makes all the difference in the world for reliable holding, setting and resetting!

Here in PNW we usually anchor...

Re: solo anchoring technique

Helps to have a bowsprit. Chain is heavy and doesn't get fouled on the prop or rudder under controlled conditions. Would never deploy forward with rope rode!

Re: solo anchoring technique

Really? Not even a boat length between you and the next boat? We're talking about anchoring, not a mooring ball field, right? I can't imagine.

I use my radar to precisely measure distances and...

Re: solo anchoring technique

I disagree with "you need plenty of room." I'm able to navigate/maneuver much more precisely going forward than in reverse, so I actually need less room, not more.

No need to reset if you go...

Re: solo anchoring technique

Lots of great ideas and feedback here. One that I can add is that there are times when it works well to deploy chain going forward instead of reverse.

All keelboats can be precisely maneuvered...

Re: Spectra Watermaker problem has me stumped

Nah, I gave up and with 200 gallons of tankage we go to a dock every 4-6 weeks or so to fill up, much easier than fiddling with the watermaker and we can go longer on our battery capacity before...

Re: CBP Roam app- Check "Yes" or "No"?

Thanks for all your responses, very helpful! Consensus seems to be to check "Yes" because you do have food on board and CBP can interview or inspect you no matter what you check.

Yesterday, a...

CBP Roam app- Check "Yes" or "No"?

Double checked it's readings with the mothership depth sounder and it's accurate. Provides water...
