Re: good source for ss backing plates?
Don't use Starboard for backing plates- it suffers from cold flow deformation. I've seen several instances where backing plates were made for stanchion bases. Over time, the plates compress and the... |

Re: Which goes on first. Awlgrip 545 primer or high build primer?
You alternated coats of epoxy primer with a vinyl ester filler? Definitely not recommended - I hope you don't have adhesive issues. You should have used Awlfair (epoxy) filler instead. |

Re: Solid Fiberglass Monohulls, a list
This is exactly how Hinckley built the decks for the first 100 or so Bermuda 40's, up until the early 70's when they switched over to foam core. This is a pic of the deck grid structure above the... |

Re: Nesting dinghys
I don't think you'll find a more carefully designed nester than Russell Brown's PT-11. The CNC machined gussets that reinforce the bulkheads adjacent to the "clamping mechanisms" are very well... |

Re: 2002 29hp Yanmar 3500-4000 hrs estimated
The engines are probably fine. Are they fitted with saildrives? If you want to do some homework, that's the place to start. There are several threads already on slipping clutches on Yanmar... |

Re: Beware people who say they have a Captains License but do not.
Not true. As long as you are not taking passengers for hire, there is no legal requirement to have a Captain's License to deliver a boat. Of course, without a license, you would be unlikely to... |

Re: Painting the yacht
"They" (AkzoNobel) are still making it. They are also still making Awlgrip - it's the same company. Both continue to be widely available in the US. |

Re: Diesel Outboards in USA
You could build a long-tail "mud motor" with a small air-cooled diesel engine. Kits are readily available on ebay. It would be loud and impractical, but certainly unique - I've never seen one... |

Re: Ripples in the paint. HELP!
You paint is "curtaining". It sounds counterintuitive, but you need to thin the paint even more, and apply it in thinner coats. Don't bother with spraying - too much set up, too steep a learning... |

Re: URGENT UPDATE! Lake Tashmoo Martha's Vineyard
Did you happen to notice if "Seeker" (Ted Box's 70' homebuilt scow) was anchored in the lake? I was wondered where they might put her for the winter. |

Re: Awlgrip, Gelcoat, or Epoxy
Actually, the PT Watercraft method recommends that you use West Epoxy as the prime coat instead of Interlux primer, so yes, the paint bonds very well to epoxy. Perhaps you are thinking of the... |

Re: Awlgrip, Gelcoat, or Epoxy
Wise words - this really is the best option for your project. Two-part polyurethanes simply lay down better than any epoxy paint, and are much simpler than trying to get a smooth finish with... |

Re: Yanmar SD40 & SD50 "slipping" Saildrive Upgrade
Volvo has had similar clutch issues, and around 2010 they issued a service bulletin that specifies the use of 10W-40 instead of ATF in its D130 saildrives. I think I even received a little sticker... |
