Re: Why are outboards so unreliable?

There are no bad outboards. There are only bad owners. Lol

Re: Yanmar Water Pump Problem

I've not tried this, and I'm not in a position to do so as I've sold the boat, but I'm intrigued at the possibilities of the 12 volt water pumps available on Ebay for less than the price of a new...

Re: Impossible to Fix Westerbeke? 7.6BTD mocks all repair efforts!

A blown head gasket can pressurise the cooling system to the point where no cooling water can get into the water passages. Long shot I know, but if all obvious causes have been investigated, then it...

Re: Sailing is for Rich People only

The problem with sailing as a hobby is not the purchase of a boat(you can find very good deals if you set your sights low enough) but the cost of parking the darn thing. My local marina wants more...

Re: I Found a Rig

I think you're overthinking this. Are you planning to race this boat or do you just want to sail here and there? Any kind of mast will hold up enough sails to do some kind of cruising. If you can't...

Re: Sole Diesel mini 34 wierd engine oil leak

Before you go tearing things apart, make sure your engine breather isn't clogged. If your engine has a PCV valve it might be stuck. This will cause positive crankcase pressure and possible oil...

Re: Keel failure - how to stay upright

I'd have been very tempted to bring the mast down. Without it, I would expect a keel-less hull would be quite stable.

Re: Yanmar 1GM (cone-type trans) needs revving to CLUNK into gear both FWD and REVERS

I'd be inclined to drain the old oil out of it, flush it with kerosene or some such and refill with fresh oil. You might avoid all that dismantling stuff.

Re: Cruising/ leaving boat on hard/ no cradle?!

Here in UK I've seen cradles made from scaffolding poles and clamps. Boat owners rent the poles from building scaffolding companies who will also put the cradle together.

Re: I've tried Everything....Yanmar with Sooty exhasut

I would suspect you're running too cold. Check/replace thermostat.

Re: If You're Thinking of Selling

In the UK we don't have any of this bureaucratic hassle. Maybe we are the new "Land of the Free".

Re: Loud Outboards - How to Reduce Sound?

I doubt if changing to 4 stroke engines would improve the situation. I think you've got a resonance problem due to the lightweight construction of your boat. I would suggest trying various ways of...

Re: Did I have to give way? Plus short-long blast.

For me it's simple. I stay out of the way of working boats. I'm just floating about, having fun. I don't need to get in the way of somebody earning a living.

Re: Lombardini FOCS engines decent product? Just bought a 3 cyl LDW903

I've always used 30:1 to equate hours run to miles travelled with car engines. For boats I'd use 1/2 hull speed. Hours run is a very imprecise indicator of engine condition however, so I'm not sure...

Re: Honda 2.3HP starting issues at night

Get an old spark plug and set the gap to around 3mm. Use this to check the spark. If it won't produce a spark you have a compromised ignition system. Check for good earths, HT lead, plug cap, coil...

Re: Should I turn these OFF or leave them ON?

Aha. I put my smart phone inside my fridge with the shutter delay turned on. I can confirm that the light inside my fridge turns off when the door is shut. YMMV

Re: Yanmar 1GM10 - Impeller problem

I had similar difficulties with my 1GM10. I developed a theory that the problem was that when I stopped the engine with the pull handle the engine would bounce backwards when the piston came up on...

The ongoing maintenance costs for a boat that big are going to be huge.

Re: Lets have a friendly discussion about the Rules of the Road

I don't have extensive deep water sailing experience, mainly a coastal sailor, but have always treated the colregs as advisory, in that I will always act as if the other guy hasn't seen me, or is...
